Tires/max wear

What is your favorite LONGEST WEARING TIRE?
Looking at my 265-70-17 Michelin LTX M/S 2 , I am disappointed with the amount of wear from towing. Minimal/normal wear on front tires,
rotate every 10k 80 psi etc..............
Tires have 3 center 7/8 inch WIDE ribs with a 1/2 inch space on either side(4 total)--NOT MUCH RUBBER ON THE ROAD FOR A TIRE THAT WIDE. Maybe that accounts for the wear under the pin weight?
Not pleased with the LTX tires..............
Following a 9,000 mile + trip there was significantly MORE wear on the drive tires than the steer tires.

SO what are your recommendations for a longer wearing tire? What tires have given you the best wear?

I am aware of the weight police-But the tire pressure police----
GIVE ME A BREAK!
I SHALL CONTINUE TO RUN 80 PSI
My Dodge rides great and handles great. If I believed the maxed pressure caused tire wear I would drop the pressure.
My steer xl shows little wear and they are MAXED at 80 PSI.
The rears show more wear(even wear)-I believe it is due to the pin weight after 42,000 miles mostly towing
The OP was to inquire what tires wear best-AND THAT IS ALL!!!!!!

Just My Opinion Ron but those new ones won't last either with that pressure. Your center belts are taking a beating from over inflation. Pretty sure I know tires, ask Chris where he bought his Duravis R250's tires from for his RV. :W

Well we will have to just disagree here.

HA, no nerve struck! Full head of hair here. I was tired from working on one of my Son's Dental Clinics he is building and was just concentrating on the tire issue.

Ok you say the new ones "won't last either". Not sure what you mean. Comparing the new tires to the ones with 40K I would say I was getting great mileage out of the MS2's especially with the heavy RV I tow and being a Dually.

You say they are overinflated. My door sticker says 80psi on the fronts. I am not a lot under the front axle rating with or without a load.

My 98 2500 4X4 RAM/Cummins I easily got 120K out of Michelins running 72 front and 45 rear solo. My front axle on the 15 Dually weighs a lot more then the 98 did.

If you l;look at most peoples pickups the front tires are very worn on the outside edge and the centers are worn on the rears. If you rotate front to back then the tires will equalize but will result in low mileage out of a set of tires.

I base my tire inflation on well over a million miles on my vehicles. I always get more than the average bear with my tires.

I would love to run less air in the fronts to improve the ride but I want the best tire life.

Just looked up my tire inflation chart. 65psi (15# lower as you said) gives 2,680# single application. My front axle weighs 5,440# that's 2,720 per tire. with 150# pin weight off that puts me exactly at tire rating. That would be fine if I rotated the tires. But I don't and I also account for braking and turning with my inflations.

You are running WAY too much air pressure! Since you know your weights use the weight/inflation chart for your tires. Add 5psi to what the chart says.

X2!!

Your tires are rated at 3,195# ea. at 80 psi. That means at 80 psi you have 6,390# of capacity, carrying 5,000#. That is about 80% of capacity, you are running overinflated.

I run between 65 psi to 70 psi in my rear tires with a 5,500# rear axle GAW Towing. When not towing I run about 50 psi in the rear, better wear and great traction.

Thanks, sometimes I wonder if anyone understands you DON'T HAVE TO run MAX inflation unless the load requires it.

Just me but 80 is about 15 PSI to much on your fronts. Clearly the center sipeing is almost gone and the outers are in fine shape. Surprised the side walls lasted that long though from what I've read :W Hey now that I look at it your outside rear is showing almost the same pattern.
They kind of look like a male baldness pattern :B And I know hair buddy.

Actually the rears had about 1/32" less tread in the centers. That is why I have gone from 45 solo to 40psi.

On the fronts the edges are slightly rounded so less air would mean more edge wear. The front tread was very even across.

Photos can be deceiving.

FYI on my 15 the unloaded front axle weight is about 5,400#. I won't rotate the rears and will swap the fronts every 10K. If I don't swap the fronts the edges start to "STEP".

Same tire but with 2,500 miles on my 15.

Same siping at 40K

Bridgestone Duravis and Michelin XPS rib are two commercial long-wearing (and retreadable) tire lines available in light truck sizes that might fit your tow.

They score a lot lower on traction, particularly wet traction, and are not good tires for use in snow. Those are the tradeoffs when you optimize for wear rather than ride or traction. That should be less of an issue for tires used on a trailer, can be an issue on an everyday driver.

I've chosen to put the XPS Ribs on my motorhome, which I do not drive in winter weather and try to avoid driving in very wet weather. On my E-350 van, which I use all the time and take north in the winter, I still use all-season tires (LTX MS/2). Usefulness of long-wear rib tires depends on where and how you use them.

Michelin's light truck tires seem to wear like iron on the tread. However I had to replace the OEM Michelins on my '05 Ram 3500 in 2009 because of significant cracking on the sidewalls and at the bead. A shame because there was plenty of tread remaining on them.........
