Just look at the Cummins High Mileage Club!

I went to the high mileage club and filtered on 1,000,000 miles and came up with (115) 5.9 CTD and (6) 6.7 CTD.

The 5.9's with over 1,000,000 are mostly the low HP versions.

We had a Cummins 5.9 in a farm tractor. Loved the sound but soon learned the 5.9 wasnโ€™t really built for farm use. Seems at approx 6000 hrs numerous tractors were ready for overhaul. Pistons came from Brazil, oil pumps came from China. John Deere, New Holland, using their own engines and the Case IH using the larger Cummins all seem to get 10,000+ hrs before overhaul.

The 5.9/6.7 May be fine for trucks that donโ€™t demand full power for hours on end but farm tractors... Iโ€™ll pass.

I believe the engine in the Case was an Iveco/CNH 5.9L, not a Cummins 5.9L. Many people thought they were the same since they had a joint agreement to share technology and the displacement was the same, but they were different down to the block and bore/stroke ratio. In fact they shared very little common parts. Cummins mostly made their own while Iveco/CNH outsourced them.

JCB Fastrac tractors used the Cummins 5.9. 6000 hours was about it. CaseIH, those Iโ€™m familiar with used other Cummins engines with better longetivity more in line with John Deere, New Holland, and others.

Iโ€™m not knocking the 5.9/6.7. It may be just fine in a pickup truck where it only runs max performance for short spurts but it just isnโ€™t what itโ€™s bigger siblings are at all contrary to what some want to claim.

We have equipment with Iveco engines.....the nameplate says "Iveco". The small 1896 Case farm tractors which were built from 1985 - 1989 used the 5.9 diesel. It was the CDC (Consoladated Diesel Corporation)/Cummins B series engine. I am all but certain it had a Cummins nameplate on the engine. In the Case 1896 it produced 106 HP.

Cummins is an Industrial engine.

Cummins 6bt engine is in every market. Hell Ford used it in class 6,7 and 8 trucks for how long?

yes starting in 1984 Cummins has been put in alot of industrial equipment as well as running stationary equipment like pumps and generators running 24/7 for months on end, sure the first Cummins in a Dodge truck was a 160hp non-intercooled smokey dog, but they pulled very well and were almost indestructible, with little maintenance.

this alone is what sold the trucks, I have owned many Dodge diesel trucks, but it wasn't because I like a Dodge truck.
