I'm getting a new travel trailer, 31' Forest River Wildwood X-lite towing with 2008 Suburban. I will be installing a Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution System but only after I get it home. Dealer will not let me work on there lot witch I under stand.I live 15 min. from dealer on a strait mostly flat highway (101) Nipomo to Santa Maria. Is this crazy? Should I find a place on the side of the road to install the WD to the trailer?

Thanks

Your dealer is an idiot and is trying to force it so you have to buy his hitch or at least pay for install. I understand possible liability issues if you hurt yourself doing the install on their property, but what about the liability when he forces you to leave with an unsafe setup?

You could overstress the receiver and cause failure when you greatly exceed the rating. If they refuse they should at least be willing to deliver for a minimal fee.

Don't drive anywhere with a trailer that long without WD on a Suburban, especially not on 101.

For a 15 minute drive they should deliver it!!
Even pay them $20 for gas if you have to.

When I bought my new trailer this past October, the dealer towed it outside the gate and put it on the shoulder where I then hooked it up myself including putting on my weight distribution bars and sway bar which I already had.
If it looks level, (in the same plane as your TV) you will probably be ok, but if it is not I wouldn't want to do it unless I was crawling.

I can relate with dealer. I'm buying hitch from Etrailer and not them. It will take drilling into the frame and could take some time. Would it be that bad to drive the 10 miles to my house? I will have my trailer brake connected.

Dealer is an idiot! Who does he think will get sued if there's an issue.
I think 15 minutes of travel is fine as long as it's not freeway speeds.

Nice dealer ! How much did you just spend there ????
I would install the hitch there and pretend you are deaf .

Let him call the P.D. , get their opinion of this dealer putting you out on a public highway with an unsafe set up. (the same public highway as they drive on)
