When we bought our 2013 it was made clear to us by the salesman that the new model Exploders were NOT made to tow, or even go too far off road. Body on frame is gone and there is not provisions to mount a hitch, so you're left will bumper pull. His recommendation was to stick with nothing more than like a pop up. I think you get 500 lbs tongue and that's it. No WD hitch capability. I wouldn't push the new ones very far.

2011 Ford RV and Trailer Towing Guide

Umm.. no.

The information in that guide specifies the MAX "towing capacity" however the itty bitty fine print specifically states provided your vehicle is PROPERLY EQUIPPED (IE you may need certain options in order to tow at that number).

On top of that it additionally mentions in itty bitty print that those numbers are for BASE (IE STRIPPED DOWN) models.. Options and trim levels will reduce the max towing capacity.

Additionally you WILL RUN OUT OF PAYLOAD BEFORE EVER REACHING THAT MAX TOWING NUMBER LISTED IN THAT GUIDE..

People love to point out these guides as the almighty towing spec guide.. They are not.. The PAYLOAD CAPACITY OF YOUR VEHICLE SUPERCEEDS ALL OF THE INFO IN THAT GUIDE..

Use that guide with extreme care.. or better yet ignore that guide..

OP NEEDS to find the available payload, then work from that..

Not enough info to go by. What year/make/model trailer. what package Explorer, etc.

I would agree with not enough information.

First and foremost take a look at the tire loading sticker located on your drivers door post.

On that sticker you will find the absolute max payload the vehicle is rated to haul..

This payload number is how much weight that you can safely add to the vehicle which is your passengers, personal gear, fuel and if you have any leftover your trailer tongue (the trailer tongue weight becomes "payload" of the vehicle towing the trailer)..

Once we have the payload then the max trailer load can be calculated..

Say for instance AS AN EXAMPLE you have 500lbs of payload left after subtracting passengers, fuel and personal gear..

Your tongue weight must be 10%-15% for proper towing..

500 lbs would give you 5000 lbs of trailer at 10% tongue weight.

500 lbs would give you 3333 lbs of trailer at 15% tongue weight.

Keeping in mind that is FULLY LOADED TRAILER WEIGHT and not "dry" weight or empty weight.. NO ONE CAMPS WITH A EMPTY TRAILER!

Not to mention ideally your tongue weight should be 12%-15% for best trailer towing..
