TRANSMISSION ?

Had our Kia Sedona tuned up & serviced prior to a trip from Portland to Yosemite to hike. Leaving home the check engine light came on and went on and off for the tntire trip. Upon our return we were told by the dealer the transmission coded a problem. Car works fine, shifts well. Dealer wants to replace transmission via extended warranty. Great except that it will take two weeks to order & install new factory transmission. How can it be going out and still drive fine? wE HAVE TOWED WITH THIS RIG FOR 92k

If Kia says it needs to be replaced then by all means replace it

PS - Its never a bad idea to get a 2nd opinion!

If you aren't at a transmission specialist now, I highly recommend using one for the 2nd option. My go-to shop in Portland is Marsh Transmission in Tualatin. Very knowledgeable and very good work. I shipped all my rebuilds to them when I was running a shop in Corvallis.

If they are recommending a new transmission based on a code, its most likely something conclusive such as "excessive slip", i.e. (output shaft) is turning less than (input shaft * gear ratio) which tells the computer that the torque convert clutch isn't holding or working at all. A bad sensor can't really give this code, it would instead give a code such as "open shaft-speed sensor circuit". A code such as "excessive fluid temperature" may be less conclusive, however knowing the vehicles usage, I'd put my money on the temps actually being high, vs a bed sensor.

Now any repair facility worth $.02 knows that sensors can do that yet they tried to get you a new transmission through extended warranty, possibly ripping off the warrantor. Do you really want to do business with people like that? It may be you the next time on the wrong end of their deal. If they ran the necessary tests then disregard my comments.

I would ask them to test the sensor that is throwing the code just to ensure that its not a sensor.

Normally I would agree, but since they are doing a new trans under the extended warranty, why question it?

As long as they replace the sensor you are golden...

Kind of like the man I knew who's motor locked up...they replaced the long block...went to start the new motor and it had the exact same problem...motor locked up...

Turns out the motor was fine and the Alternator was what was locked up.

Thanks!

There can be a bad internal seal on a clutch pack that is preventing the clutches from building up the proper pressure. It won't be noticeable under normal driving, but it allows the clutches to slip and would lead to early failure.

I would definitely get it replaced under warranty. If you wait, it could end up costing you thousands when it finally does let go.
