Truck camper meet-up at Overland Expo, Flagstaff, May

Hi everyone,

This has been hinted at a few times already, but here is the official invitation.

Overland Expo 2013 is being held at Mormon Lake, near Flagstaff, AZ from May 17 to 19.

I want to organise a truck-camper meet-up at the show. Last year we attended the European equivalent of this show in Germany and as well as being a fascinating show in its own right, it was great to see and spend time with the thousands of travellers with varied campers and overland vehicles that turned up and camped. So this year I think it would be great to have a truck camper meet-up in AZ.

Unfortunately we cannot bring our little truck camper along, since it is 5000 miles and an ocean away, but Sally and I will be coming in a rental B class camper we are picking up in Denver.

I've been talking to the show organisers and they have a basic camping field (no hook-up, but being TC owners I think we can cope with that :)) for $10 per night. They said they would love to have us come with our TCs and will set aside an area especially for us :B

I've been talking to a few of you already and so I know we've got a few takers, but I'd like to know who else would like to come. I'm not saying you need to commit 100% now, but I'd like to get an idea of the numbers involved so the show organisers know what size of area to set aside for us.

Hope to see you all in May to circle the wagons and get out the barbecues,

Steve & Sally.

I believe there's an RV dump associated with the campground run by the Mormon Lake Lodge. Same folks that operate the showers.

Anyone know if there is an RV dump nearby? I will need to dump my tiny tanks before I set up!!

Steve/Bryan,
We are really looking forward to this event. I've heard that 16 TCers are confirmed for the event. I'd love to see that confirmed list posted here on this thread.
Hi Mike!
While Steve is able to speak for himself, on whom is on the EXPO list, I would think anyone could share, on this forum, their plans or desire to attend the EXPO. What I do know is that a large portion of the people attending have requested that their attendance not published on a public forum. As I have written many times, on this forum too, one tenet of personal security is not to publicise their coming and going from their homes. I suspect this is one of many reasons some have requested this privacy. While someone may ask you a question, about anything, you have the right to decline to answer if you choose and no meaning should be derived by that, other than the question; "Why would you ask?"

b

Thanks, Bryan. I guess I should've stated why I was asking. I could go back through this thread to see who intends on going and compile a list myself. My reason for asking was to see if the 16 confirmed includes those from the TCM group as well.
As you are referring to the Truck Camper Magazine group, we have only heard from one person. We did hear from TCM themselves (Angela) and there is no plan, by TCM, to organise any gathering, just an effort to share with the readers of the event. .

I do believe the number, RV.net members attending, to be 16. It was planned for a staging of 25 Truck Campers. This total has decreased due to some bringing trailers, as I am one of these. We just wanted to make sure that there is generous room around the individual campers.

Sorry, we were unable to send you information, on the EXPO, due to your RV.net account does not accept PM, nor do we have an email for you.

Sounds great DJ - though we've rented the wrong vehicle for that ๐Ÿ˜ž - if only I had my own truck camper with me.

We will be heading sort of in the direction of Mesa Verde and then back to Denver for the following weekend - but we are completely flexible.

Steve.

Sent you an email. It's about an RV ripoff rental outfit here in Denver. Hope it's not the one you are using. Just a 'heads up'.

See ya soon.

We're heading up to Grand Canyon for a day after the Expo...
I have to get Zack back to school so unfortunately we won't have time for Moab.

It was interesting when Mark posted the invite in the Truck Camper forum on Expo Portal to go to the O.E. in Flag, no one jumped in at all. Hundreds looked, but no one said they were coming. Me thinks there are just a lot of wanna-bee expedition types over there who just, "found that expedition hat". It looks as if the real expedition camper types are right here on the TC forum.
Speaking of 'real' expo types, my neighbors ( who are never home), the Turtle Expedition Wescott's are at it again and won't be at the E.O. in Flag this year (as they were last year). I read in our local paper that they have just begun another photo/journal expedition (like a real one) over the silk road. They are driving cross country to the East Coast, transporting the rig to Europe, driving down to the middle east and east again over the historic Silk Road. What makes this newsworthy is their time frame. Three Years on the Silk Road! People! We are not worthy, and total Poseurs when it comes to expedition camping. Monica speaks at least 6 languages fluently, and I suspect she brushed up on her Mandrin for this episode.
What caught my eye and made me want to go to the Overland Expo this May were several of the talk/and show programs. One is the specter of circumnavigating the lower 48 in a truck camper. We have been wanting to do this for a long time, and it will be good to see what someone else did, and what time of year they did it, before we do it. The others have to do with desert camping in Morrocco and generally following he way of the Long Range Desert Group LRDG and the SAS between 1941 and 1943 in N. Africa.
Of course, the like-minded commraderie at O.E. should be excellent.
Thanks to Steve and Mark for promoting this fine meet as a subset of the Overlanding experience.
regards, as always, jefe
