Warranty Question

I know this has been asked a million times, but I will take the advise from this forum and purchase, or not purchase this warranty. We turned down the dealer warranty; $2500 for 5 yrs. We priced the RV wholesale warranty and its $1500 for 7 years. When we told the dealer that we're bi-passing his warranty due to a much cheaper one, he gave us a lengthy talk on why we shouldn't go that route.

My wife and I would gain piece of mind having this warranty, but what are your thoughts? I read through the fine print and know what it does and does not cover, but buying through a wholesaler worries me a little because I'm afraid that places like Camping World won't work on the unit using a 3rd party warranty.

Thanks!

For a TT you are looking at approx $1500 for a plan. but on a MH you would be looking at several thousand for a plan. I doubt one $3, 000 repair would cover what the plan costs. However, if I were full timing that would be a different issue. I full timed for a few years. Most RV parks don't allow you to work on your RV. I just completed a repair on my MH step that was covered under warranty. Since I have a welder & all the tools I could do the repair myself. Could not have done that repair on the road fulltiming. JMHO.

Yes there are two very opposite camps regarding extended warranties. Personally, I have always maintained an extended warranty on every MH I have owned over the last 30+ years. I have had a transmission, frig, a/c, electric step, hydraulic jacks all covered by various warranties. This is not to say the warranties paid for themselves, sometimes yes, sometimes no. Rather I was not hit by a sudden huge repair, like $3Grand for the transmission or almost $2K for the basement air.
I purchased my most recent policy from WholesaleWarranties.net. They offered an assortment of warranties with different co-pays, I chose a $50 deductible. When I had a claim this summer (the hydraulic jacks were stuck down and the jack motor had to be replaced) the people at Wholesale Warranties acted as my agent. They walked me through the claim (you MUST follow all the rules with an extended warranty) when I felt the authorization was moving slowly they called the warranty company and had a senior officer call me with reassurance. They checked in with me regularly until the work was completed to my satisfaction. My mobile mechanic accepts the warranty, all of the local RV shops in my area accept extended warranties. This summer, when the jacks required temporary emergency repair to get me on the road Camping World in the Portland Oregon area accepted my extended warranty.
Give the people at Wholesale Warranties a call or e-mail. Even if you don't use them, they will give you a price range that can be compared with your dealer.
I met two of the young men involved in the company at the FMCA Indio rally and I was impressed with their knowledge of RVing.
Happy Trails.

For Class A or Class C rigs it might be wise to invest on a warranty since they could tally some pretty high repair bills. For most towable rigs (5ers & TTs) there is a higher probability that you will not see the benefit since many of the issues are easily fixed if you are handy with tools. I prefer doing my own work whenever possible as it tends to be far superior than what most RV repair places can deliver, plus I don't have to drag my rig over to their lot and wait for days or weeks (sometimes months) while they get somebody to look and repair it. We're on our sixth camping season with over 50K miles logged and have never had to return to dealer for any work. There's nothing wrong with getting a warranty and the $1500 plan for 7 years is not a bad price if I were looking for peace of mind. Enjoy your new TT!!!

I am in the warranty camp...our dealer included the warranty with our coach when we purchased it. It was a 2 yr warranty thru Prizm. During that two yr period, repairs to the coach totaled about 9k so we are ahead of the game. When that warranty expired we could not renew as they are only sold through dealers, so I called Wholesale Warranties. They offered two plans that would work for us, Allegiance and XtraRide. My research showed that both plans were well accepted across the country with dealers. (read they pay their bills) We full time so that was important to us. We ultimately went with the Allegiance plan.

Both plans are exclusionary plans, meaning if it's not listed as excluded, it's covered. WYSIWYG...the difference was XtraRide would not waive the weasel clause "if a covered part fails due to the fault of a non covered part, the covered part is not covered". I was uncomfortable with that. Allegiance has a provision to have that removed, which we did.

There are those who profess that these warranties, actually service agreements, are not worth it and put your money in a savings account yada yada yada...my comfort zone puts me in the warranty group. So far we've spent about 3k on warranty items this past year. (My cooling unit failed) so I feel the warranty has already taken care of itself.

Feel free to put your money in a savings account if, in the words of Dirty Harry, "you feel lucky".....:B....Dennis

I have had 3 RVs under an extended plan. Never used them. Always seemed like the things that failed weren't insured. Just bought another new MH & didn't get the extended plan. If I were buying used I might have considered it more. The other thing dealers push on new sales is ERS. Most manufactues give first year road service free. Dealers don't usually mention that.
