Need to replace one of the tail lights due to daughters breaking license plate bracket of tail light. So I ask the dealer for the sealant for the tail light, and he tells me to use silicone caulk, is this right? It's an aluminum sided trailer, and I thought I read numerous times not to use silicone.

Thank you for all the input, I think I will stick with the Butyl tape and Proflex. Also pick up a large roll of the Eterna bond tape for roof. Is it best to remove all lap sealant and replace with a fresh layer before applying the Eterna bond tape or just clean roof, and then apply tape?

Butyl tape under the fixture, Geocel Proflex around the edge. Silicone is great for the shower and your sink but that's about it.

All of the external fixtures I've seen are sealed with butyl tape (sometimes called putty tape)

Silicone is not for rubber roofs (maybe thats where you remember it from) but is "OK" for aluminum. But as others have said there are products that hold up better to the elements.

You could use silicon but my experience is that it will look nasty in short order, and while it is flexible, it tends to loose it's adhesion too quick.

I would use Geocel Pro Flex products or something like that instead.

I think there are much better sealers like 3M 4000 UV. IMO Silicone deteriorates and mildews too quickly and I wouldn't use it.
