Okay, you have polybutelene pipe which is a different material than pex.
You'll need a sharkbite adapter to go from the older gray pipe to pex to tbe 1/2" mpt to connect to your water heater.

The original fitting going into the water pipe is plastic and a bit wider than the brass.
The water tubing is blue and snugged up with the a copper ring.
I have a few things to get ready on the camper for the winter in AZ. Maybe look for some gold there.
I would like to post a pic of my rig but getting a photo in is too much trouble.

Ours and most use a swivel connection that threads onto water tank. Ive seen pictures of fittings without swivel that were threaded onto tank and then lines crimped on-
hopefully yours isn't one of those- a bit more involved.
