What did your previous vehicle cost you?

I recently sold my 2005 F250 and wanted to see what the vehicle actually cost me, so I added up purchase price, upgrades, service, repairs, wear items, insurance and registration then subtracted the selling price. The only other expenses I had was fuel which I kept out of the calculations. I figured this was cost for me to own the vehicle with depreciation (purchased new) and came up with $325 month. Does anyone else do this or am I the only one?

But what did you purchase? Was it just transportation, or was/is it a way to have memorable vacations, a chance to travel with the kids and grandkids, a means to see places in the United States that would otherwise only be viewed from the window of a plane.
But if it is only the cost you are considering, did you factor in the trip to the doctor or chiropractor when you said you could change the tire by yourself. Or that night you and yours had to spend a night in a motel while the thing-a-mo-bob had to be replaced. (does that night go on the positive or negative side?)
Happy Trails, and may it all be worthwhile in the end.

The purchase price would include any finance charges you paid over the life of the vehicle as well as any initial fees.

My previous truck was also bought new, but I kept it for 16 years. Vehicles were cheaper back then so depreciation was less too. Keeping the vehicle longer also took some sting out of the resale. Perhaps I should be comparing overall vehicle cost to income for a better barometer because I definitely made less money 26 years ago...

As noted. $325 is decent.

DW buys things online, but never considers "shipping cost" as part of cost. Go figure. :h

Wow, thanks for this topic... I just poked at the calculator and came up with 36 bucks a month. Whew! Although that isn't for any previous tow vehicle, but the present one. Then again - there are lots of months out of every year it just sits in the garage... :C

So far, I like that answer the best.

Wants & Needs, So far my needs have been met. It's also my daily driver & TV. I would like your Duramax though.

To Date: All costs included, having purchased my truck used 8 years ago & a new engine installed, 40,000 miles ago, and I still have it. :B $115 a month. :B

I haven't figured it out per month, but I've done that on previous vehicles. It really doesn't tell you anything other than vehicles are dang expensive. You'd have to have another vehicle at the same time to have any kind of comparison, and even then you're probably looking at apples to oranges (unless you had two tow vehicles, or two vehicles service the same general purpose, etc). It's still fun to do though.
