Who checks their oil?

After doing an oil change?
Do ya dump in the reccomended amount of oil, put the cap on, slam the hood down and takeoff?
Or do you check to make sure it reads right on the dipschtick?

New question.
Dropping the hammer on an 1100mi drive tomorrow. Ole truck had its last oil change in January and weโ€™ve put a whopping 4000mi on it since then. On the upside my company rig has gotten all the attention
Odds that Iโ€™ll pop the hood and pull the dipschtick tonight or will I not wait for the pre heat light to go off, fire it up and roll out?

Good stuff boys!
The whole point of this thread , other than to see if I can be like the big dawgs here and get 10 pages in a couple days, lol, was to take something as simple as changing your own oil.
You know how much it takes. You drained the oil. Of course check for leaks, but even thatโ€™s not really a thing. Iโ€™d say check you tightened both the filter and the plug and your old filter still has itโ€™s gasket.
Now you fill a pre set amount. Why check it? Maybe itโ€™s not level or maybe the oil hasnโ€™t all drained down. And maybe just maybe the engine doesnโ€™t care if itโ€™s a qt high or qt low.
Just like this, we all have our little inequities and unless thereโ€™s a real reason behind it, doesnโ€™t mean your right....or wrong just becuz you doo it!

After reading all the posts ther are some crazy azz ideas. I will let you decide on what ones??

I know, right? Like metering out 11qt 24oz of oil in an engine that basically takes 3 gallons?
Merry Christmas!

Or draining overnight.

Hey why not get all out you can? I am a bit on the picky side!!!

I can see overnight if you want it to drip every drop out that it will if you have the time ,and its not a hassle to do so,, but come on, 11 quarts and 24 oz. thats beyond picky. I am sure they have a name for it , buts its not picky. :h

Seriously, what does that tell you about the level of the oil when engine is cold on level ground?

DODGE Dealer changes oil/filter plus safety checks for $49.99
12 QTS Rotella

I don't have to get under truck, get dirty, spill oil getting filter off and then get rid of 12 qts/filter

Yeah....I don't!

DOn't check dip stick either.
Takes 12 qts and doesn't have leaks

That's a great deal OB

Check your drain plug too.
A friend of mine was camping buy hisself, and changed his oil at camp. After draining, and filling with new oil, he looked under to see the last new oil drain out, thus a 10 mile walk to hwy to get a ride for oil.lol

I never start any threads....

Just want to help Grit get to 10 pages....I change my own, and do check as to amount I put in, compared to level on the dip stick. I only do this once, with each new vehicle. Now just drain oil, change filter, add 7 quarts, slam hood and done. I always park in garage when home, so I'd notice a leak happening.

I always check mine at oil change but rarely afterwards. I would probably check the truck more often if I didn't need a ladder to do it but to be honest it is rare that any of my vehicles need oil between changes. The most trouble that I have had was when I had a dealer change my oil. They not only couldn't hit the full mark but had a bucket full of excuses on why. To them the fact that I can with the right amount of oil was just proof of my incompetence.

A friend of mine in the late 70's worked at a full service station. He got a percentage of all l sales. He LOVED the Vega's as they are a FULL quart low when checked getting fuel. He would pull the stick, show the customer and add a quart and think "just made some more beer money" !

A few years ago I came near fisticuffs with the Manager at a quick lube (redhead). We were trying to clear up my Father in Laws Estate. Took his TrailBlazer in and they did their thing. I asked them to put back I think it was 5.5 quarts. I explained I already know when it's checked hot it's a 1/2 quart low. So the reality was they would remove about 5.5 quarts.

I finally won the argument but it was insane that he could not understand by popping the drain plug and letting it drain for one minute MAX it does NOT get 6 quarts out and it would be overfull with 6. Finally he agreed to me signing 5.5 quarts was my responsibility. Next morning it was right on the FULL mark.

My last and only time EVER at a quick lube.

"The real question is how many check at every fill up?"

The real question is WHY would you check your oil when part of it is still up in the engine???

Park your rig on level ground, check when engine is cold.

Now if your rig has a hot and cold check mark like my Harley that's a different story. I still check my bike BEFORE riding.

" I have them show me the dipstick to verify correct level."

So do you wait there until the engine has drained all the oil to the pan? If not how do you know if you are at the "correct level" ?
