Who here is using a hitch extension?

I was curious who here was using a hitch extension to tow a small boat, trailer etc.

Not interested in SuperHitch as this isn't feasible to me at this time.

I am looking to haul some kayak's and some other light weight items.

I was wondering how you guys are doing with 24-36" extensions.

I cut a 36" extension for a 2-1/2" receiver down to 22" to haul my 16" open aluminum trailer with ATV's in the factory 2-1/2" receiver hitch. I've been doing this for thousands of miles (including many dirt roads and gravel pits) for three years without any issues. Not everyone needs a Superhitch, it really depends on your load.

Your right but some of us just want a Super Hitch because they are so awesome.

Had a Lance 981 Max fully loaded and used a 24" extension in a Reese Tow Beast Class V hitch. Worked fine for me but was only flat towing a Suzuki Samurai.

I have a small "Malone" brand bolt together kayak trailer I tow with a 34" hitch extension on my class V OEM hitch. I use a couple of HD nylon ratchet straps the same way the big boys use chains with turn buckles to keep the extension from flopping around. The entire trailer which I have modified to include a soft zippered cargo carrier under the boats for all the paddles, life jackets, carts and other gear weighs less than 1,000 pounds fully loaded with either three kayaks or two kayaks and one canoe. Works fine!

Thanks fella's. I went down to my local trailer specialist and they said 18" extension is the maximum I can run with a ClassIII hitch 2" receiver. I bought the 18" extension as I have a ball that ads about another 10". Hopefully the 28" gets me behind the camper so I can tow what I need...

Otherwise I guess I step up to a Superhitch.

I do it with a 30 inch but I have the class 5 hitch. But IO am hauling a 3500 pound trailer. Kayaks on a lite aluminum trailer should be pretty darn light.

I have a 24 inch 2 1/2 extension which works fine, but I haven't hauled anything heavy. The biggest danger is the leverage on the hitch if you don't have a Class V hitch of some type.
