At least put a happy face when you make those comments.... otherwise you just come off as being ignorant.

Canada is a great place to live.....but we too have our social misfits that think stealing is a right, or something.

Yes....I'm a very lucky guy.....but I MADE some of that luck through 90 hour work weeks.

If I ever catch some one trying to steal or damage my belongings....they better have a health plan.

I take times like this to thank God for all my problems. We were camping the weekend before last and realize that our bathtub drain was leaking and had soaked the insulation under our camper. At first I was upset, angry, frustrated, etc. After I dried it up the best I could, I realized how fortunate I was to have this problem.

How many MILLIONS of people in this country, let alone the world would love to have a main home as nice as my vacation travel trailer? How many people would love to have a reliable truck? Disposable income to spend on camping? Friends and family to go camping with? Energy and health to be able to camp?

Thinking about that really cleared my head and I was soon laughing about what a little petulant cry baby I had been.

In reference to the attached article, its a terrible loss, but that person lost more than most people in the world will ever own. Insurance will rebuild the house, will pay off the trailer and allow for the purchase of a new one. We live in a country of excess and that person will be able to get clothing and food from charity while he settles back in and gets everything replaced. Its an inconvenience, but sometimes we need to step back and realize what is important in life.

In the grand scheme of things, everything that I have with the exception of my family and pets are easily replaceable. I have sentimental attachments to my house because I remember my 3.5 year old daughter first learning to walk in our hallway... I will always cherish the nursery where my daughter and now my son first came home. I would miss the house and physical reminder of those memories, but so long as I have my girl and boy, I will get over it.

Sorry for the "sermon", its just a realization that I think we in America (and definitely this forum) seem to forget sometimes. This is a luxury, we are blessed to have the time, energy, money, resources, knowledge, experience and ability that we have to go camping. Food for thought.

...Back on to the next thread of bickering, rants and hurling of insults...:)

THanks for sharing your story. It was sad to read.
Glad things turned around so wonderfully for you, and I understand when you say the innocence was lost.
Long story short, I was filling up my truck at a gas station, and a couple there in a van asked me for some gas money. Apparently they borrowed the van to get to a job interview and the owner didn't have enough gas in it. Anyway, the story seemed to have holes and was sometimes strange. I wish I could have cracked out my wallet and filled up thier tank. But so many scams and liars, I just gave them $10.00 and pulled out.
I watched them and they DID put the $10.00 in the tank...so legit or not, I will never know. But I hate the fact now a days I have to doubt first.

Anyway after reading your story, we can at least hope for better times ahead for this family. Maybe the camping community out that way will chip in and help.

About the time you think you've heard the worst of the worst, something like this comes up. So sorry for this family. Surely things will get better for them. A hard lesson in humanity for the children.

Very tragic and I feel for that family. I KNOW how they must feel ... completely devastated and loss of faith in humanity.

In 1982 I was living alone and experienced a house fire. I was able to get out of the house with just my bare body and a blanket (it started at night). I lost absolutely everything, including my bill-fold, money, car keys. Luckly he car was not parked in the garage. The house when completely down.

Now, I had some carpenter's tools in a back room that did not get completely destroyed and they were the only thing I could salvage. I had no insurance, I was pretty young and dumb back then.

A local, nearby church supplied me with some second hand clothing (which I was extremely grateful for) and they let me store my salvaged wood working tools in the basement of their church, in a store room until I could figure out what to do next. A friend let me stay with them, which gave me somewhere to sleep.

About a week later, someone broke into the church. They stole the amplifier system, microphones, and a few choice items made of brass and such, and ... of course ... my carpenter tools in that store room, along with some other things.

Now I was loosing faith in humanity pretty fast.

Having nothing left (by way of physical property... really ... nothing!) I quit my job (working at McDonlds) and enlisted in the Army a week after the theft. All I took with me was a small cloth bag with a tooth brush, an extra pair of underware, and a clean t-shirt, comb, and deodorant.

He I am 34 years later, a grandfather of 5, have a wonder wife now who is my best friend, have a great house we love in a location that's wonderful, and enjoying a good life, with even the luxury of an RV.

Did my faith in humanity ever change? Well, it never went back to the innocence I had before that. I've learned to be skeptic of everyone until proven different. The theft did change me. But life did get good again too!

So, I know, eventually, for this family, life will get good for them too! But still ... it's a sad story!
