Avion truck campers - Hundreds of photos

Without going into too much painful detail, we had a mishap several week-ends ago. While working with sand bag crews on the Mississippi River, the truck and camper fell into the flood waters as a road collapsed. Because of a number of issues dealing with the wrecker truck, we had to release the camper as the truck was reeled up over the bank. The good news is that the truck is as good as new after a thorough rinsing, inspection of brakes, etc. The bad news is that the camper was thoroughly drowned. A lot of people had far worse trouble than we did, so we consider ourselves lucky. The floods are ongoing as I write.

Our planned trip to Montana in June is called off. heh.

However, I have now convinced my dear Jane that its time to really update the TC. After drying for several days we pulled out the interior. Amazingly the Zolatone paint that I had applied last year is good as new after a cleaning.

Without burdening the TC family overmuch, I'd like to ask some advice other than don't park too near a flood :-).

My DW was overjoyed that I had a plan for the bathroom: a composting toilet developed by Nature's Head http://www.natureshead.net/. Our holding tank was practically unusable and there was no real grey water tank on the 67 Avion. Our plan is to rip out the bathroom and install one of these and converting the blackwater to a greywater tank. Any experience with this?

Finally, the roof. I admit that I have not really done the work I should have. Now, I need to remove the various sealants on the roof and repair it. We are also setting up for a solar installation. Any advice as to this?

Here's hoping I have posted the pictures correctly. And many thanks in advance for your advice.

We were delivering food and gear to crews who were setting up sandbags during a Mississippi River flood. The road was undermined by water, the truck slid oh-so -gently down the slope, and the whole thing wound up in the river. We tried to tow it out, but the camper was hooked in a way that made that impossible. So, the camper was released and sort of floated until it sank. The truck was pulled out. Then the camper was pulled over a series of plywood panels and the water was drained out..all this took away from the efforts of the flood crews. But, OTOH, we had lots of power equipment nearby.

Glad I didn't have a Lance. No disrespect intended. Its just that the Avion is a beast.

Dave Pete, this Avion has been dumped into floodwaters, crashed into an overhanging porch, backed into a steel beam at a motel and now plowed through a covered parking area.

And who can forget the time the doors locked, with the engine running, at a campground in Las Vegas? We fished through a crack in the door...actually some guys from Circus Circus fished through and unlocked the door. After about an hour. I almost had a nervous breakdown.

I forgot, now how did it end up in the flood waters? I remember you were volunteering after some storm or something right? Helping feed people or something? But cant remember how the camper got off the truck.

Its humbling and amazing. This TC is going to outlast us all.

I'm sure Cayo could fix it very easily. Besides, the roof is the easiest to repair with the coating over most of it.
Good luck with the repair and keep us informed.

Ticki, thanks for your advice. I actually got the Avion on the insurance schedule, but was never able to determine replacement costs that were realistic. Now, I'm into it. I wonder if Cayo could really make stab at this? This always an issue with restored campers. I'll try to keep everyone as I go through the process.

I feel you pain brother , don't think I could have managed to eat afterwards . The good news is , if it hasn't damaged the rafters , the roof panel is the easiest to repair , patch or replace . It goes over the front rear and side panels , and with the coating on it you will never see it . My insurance company wanted to total mine for $1200 but came around to allow me $3200 to repair , go figure .:R

Try calling Cayo for an estimate . Good luck

Ummm, Wow! That was quite a story - I'm just sitting here dumbfounded. (maybe more of a natural state than I'd like to admit) ๐Ÿ˜‰

Thanks for sharing though. These sorts of things need a support group. And now some tough next decisions huh? I'm a little blown away with the nature of the Avion to begin with. That method of build escapes me. All my best to you.

Well folks, I did it again. This time I ran into a low beam on a covered parking area. It lifted the solar unit off of the roof, tore out the Fantastic fan in the front and the vent in the center, dented the roof, and generally put us into a bad mood.

We had been looking for a restaurant in downtown Bloomington, Indiana. It was rated number 1 and was Afghani...surely an unusual combination. So we went slowly tooling around looking for a spot to park the TC as well as the Samurai we pull behind.

So, we went up to a parking shed that is also used for an outdoor farmer's market and actually measured the height before proceeding.

we went under one, under two and at about 1/2 MPH we heard a grinding sound as we passed under the third.

I tried to reverse, but Jane said hold it!!! The solar unit has wedged in the roof.

We talked to the city and they called a roofer who undid the fibreglass panels while we let air out of the tires. After about an hour we cautiously pulled back.

The solar was totaled, the roof is creased pretty badly and the front window appears to have cracked.

In an effort to Keep Calm and Carry On we went to the Afghan restaurant where they were closing... We found a place called Darn Good Soup and quietly supped on Cream of Mushroom Soup.

Believe it or not the roofers bound up the broken roof vents, etc and we went through a heavy rain to find a camping place a 100 miles away.

As they say, other than that, had did things go? Well, the insurance adjuster was just here and making noise about totaling it out since they can't figure the value nor the repair costs.

This is our third mishap with the roof and its getting a little old, not to mention expensive. My son tells me there is a device called the Giraffe that will read out potential overhead danger. I'm looking into that.

I will say the Avion can take a licking and keep on ticking. We DID continue on the road and camped very nicely for the next three days.

As to what happens with Old '67 Avion, We'll keep you informed.

Howdy!
How does your front pass through work? Or maybe the question should be
how did the back of your truck cab work( with the camper)

Hello, all.

Long time no posts. Things have certainly changed for us over the past year or so, including a different truck, moving to a new home, and a hiatus from work to get the new home in order. Now searching for a couple of years worth of work in Central Florida to be followed by more-or-less retirement(whatever that word means).

As such, we have decided to pass our 1966 C-10 on to its new owners (whomever they may be). So, if you know anyone who is looking to own a beauty, have them go to:

http://staugustine.craigslist.org/rvs/5224346870.html

Thanks for all your help and encouragement. I'm sure we'll be in touch again.

UPDATE::

Short story is, we've probably changed our minds. lol. The more we look at her, the more we can't bear the thought of letting her go. Planning to do a few repairs on the floor just inside the door today. Have to look at new tie-down rig for the new truck. Then camping in October.
See y'all on the roads, or in the parks.
