A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Went camping this weekend at a campground on the lake, had not been there for a few years. Once there I began to walk around looking at the different sites when I noticed a very old dog. He just lay there until I got too close then he got up on three legs and hobbled away. Just judging I would say he is at least 11 years old. Well back to my story. The next afternoon he wanders into camp and just sits there looking. He looked so sad, so the wife got a bowl of our dog's food and put it down for him and he came over and ate. He then walked over to our dog and the two of them sniffed each other over and then they lay down together for the rest of the afternoon. That night he disappeared.
The next morning he was back and was a little more receptive of me. I looked at his injured leg and found that half of his rear foot was gone. It had healed and was not causing any problem except that he was walking on the stub that was left with no foot pad which causes him to limp. His front teeth were gone except for one canine tooth and it looked decayed. His eyes were tired looking and showing his age. He spent the rest of the day just laying around looking for a handout and by afternoon the campground host came around and saw him. I enquired about the dog and was told he had been there for three years and that most of the campers were tolerant of him and gave him food.
So what to do? Do you pick him up and bring him home or do you let nature take it course. He can't harm anyone, he has no teeth and he isn't a nuisance unless you don't like dogs, and no one seems to mind him being there. He is gentle and likes other animals as seen by his interaction with our dog. He still would not let me touch him but he would eat from my hand. Enough said, what would you do???

On June 28th 2008 Old Fella passed away of complications caused by bone cancer. Fella spent almost three years with his new family and became the icon of rescued old stray dogs. He will be greatly missed but his foot prints have been left in our hearts forever.

Now Charlie, the ten year old rescued Golden Lab has come to be a part of the continuing Old Fella story. (*Note, Charlie took his journey to Rainbow Bridge unexpectedly September 30, 2008)Suzie continues to charm her way into our hearts with her antics as she has grown from a puppy into a young lady. Togther they will carry on the Old Fella legacy. Come join us in their daily lives and be a part of the best feel good thread in RV.NET history. The legacy lives on.

I see that you still have a sense of humor about it, which goes a long way to making pre-retirement years tolerable. ๐Ÿ™‚ I agree with Dan about dealing with personnel issues being the pits. :R

I get the headaches as well. I am 47 years old so I still have a ways to go before retirement. The only debt I have is the motorhome so I am trying to get that paid off quick and have been dumping quite a bit in 401K. Hoping to retire at 60 if things work out right. I have asked the wife if I could retire now and she could keep working. That conversation didn't go well....

Burch I know exactly what you are talking about. My job was stressful. I used to get these headaches that would last for months. It would be in a specific spot and would hurt even if I touched it lightly. One morning I woke up and said enough.

I loved the company I worked for as well as my job. But sometime between the demand and dealing with personnel it could really get to you.

Since I have been retired I have only had that headache a couple of times over the last 5 years. When I did have it would only last for a few days.

My job has been extremely stressful lately to the point I don't want to eat and am sick to my stomach. I am really looking forward to the Thanksgiving break. I really need some time off to relax with my wife and fur kids.

We are planning to go to Jetty Park during the Thanksgiving break. We are going to have the family over this Saturday to celebrate Thanksgiving and eat a bunch of good food. My aunt from Kentucky is visiting and I am really looking forward to seeing her. The dogs will be happy as they love people and will be getting a lot of attention. Pinto wants to sit in everyone's lap.

I put in for my vacation time and it was approved for next October. I am really looking forward to meeting everyone in Sevierville next year.

Richard, when our Murray (Cat) was alive we use to set her food up on the washer or dryer to keep it safe from Cookie and Rocky. As she got older we set a chair next to the washer/dryer so Murray could get up to her food easier. This might help.

Good morning everyone. Its still raining here and the temperature is stuck at 45 degrees. Weather person said this will be the high for today. Dale glad you and Terry are settled in for the winter. We really enjoyed your visit in Ohio last October.

Well we are burning up firewood with all the rain and cold. It's hard to keep dry firewood with all the rain so I bring up as much as I can to store on the covered porch and then leave a wheelbarrow full in the garage.

The camper looks lonely sitting out in the back yard all by itself, I go out at least twice a day just to check on things to make sure all is okay. I keep heat in the camper by using space heaters, one at each end of the living area pointed at each other, keeps things warm without having drastic swings in inside temperatures.

The fur babies are well, safe and dry and well fed. Dixie has learned how to make herself small enough to squeeze past the gate guarding the cat's food. So Sue made a house from a cardboard box to house the cat food, maybe that will work.

Okay I need to get moving so I will close for now wishing everyone a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and be sure to tell someone you love them.

Well, yesterday was colder than colder and it was 35* when we woke up this morning. At least no rain yesterday and it appears dry today. And like was mentioned, it's supposed to start warming up. Yesterday that old north wind was blowing and it shows us no mercy down here.

Duchess remembers her old "pee park" and even though she can't see, she wants to smell and explore the entire lot, making sure she doesn't miss anything. I keep telling her she's got six months to sniff it all out.

Terry's doctor in Indiana contacted us when we were headed to Florida and said he wanted Terry to have an upper/lower GI. His "girls" were supposed to set it up in Florida but dropped the ball. No surprise there for sure. So Terry told them to forget it and he would try getting it done when we got to Texas. I had to go to urgent care Monday for an eye inflammation and on the way back we stopped at the gastro clinic in Edinburg. Got a consultation appointment yesterday and spent the morning seeing the doctor, etc. We really like this man and he was very cooperative in working with Terry's cardiologist in getting it all set up. So he ended up with blood work and the procedure is scheduled for Monday morning. Wow! Never thought that would happen so quickly. But Terry really wanted it done and out of the way so he could forget about it.

The doctor said it is very likely the problem he is seeing is a result of the prostate radiation he had eight years ago. He said they see it often, and there isn't any treatment. . . just more like we have to rule everything else out. So that set Terry's mind to ease. I tell you. . . he has been a Million $$ man many times over since this journey began! LOL

Visited with a neighbor here who lost her husband on Father's Day this year. They are good friends. She is doing well, she said she is much better down here because there is more for her to do and she can stay very busy.

We are still working at getting things organized here. We are selling Mom's place behind us, but we turned on the power the other day and 2/3 of the trailer is without power. Apparently there are 3 zones and the only zone working is the middle one. Terry has done some troubleshooting, but with the rain and cold temps, he had to stop. He especially doesn't want to work with electric in the rain.

Take care FOOF's and settle in the for the winter.
