A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Went camping this weekend at a campground on the lake, had not been there for a few years. Once there I began to walk around looking at the different sites when I noticed a very old dog. He just lay there until I got too close then he got up on three legs and hobbled away. Just judging I would say he is at least 11 years old. Well back to my story. The next afternoon he wanders into camp and just sits there looking. He looked so sad, so the wife got a bowl of our dog's food and put it down for him and he came over and ate. He then walked over to our dog and the two of them sniffed each other over and then they lay down together for the rest of the afternoon. That night he disappeared.
The next morning he was back and was a little more receptive of me. I looked at his injured leg and found that half of his rear foot was gone. It had healed and was not causing any problem except that he was walking on the stub that was left with no foot pad which causes him to limp. His front teeth were gone except for one canine tooth and it looked decayed. His eyes were tired looking and showing his age. He spent the rest of the day just laying around looking for a handout and by afternoon the campground host came around and saw him. I enquired about the dog and was told he had been there for three years and that most of the campers were tolerant of him and gave him food.
So what to do? Do you pick him up and bring him home or do you let nature take it course. He can't harm anyone, he has no teeth and he isn't a nuisance unless you don't like dogs, and no one seems to mind him being there. He is gentle and likes other animals as seen by his interaction with our dog. He still would not let me touch him but he would eat from my hand. Enough said, what would you do???

On June 28th 2008 Old Fella passed away of complications caused by bone cancer. Fella spent almost three years with his new family and became the icon of rescued old stray dogs. He will be greatly missed but his foot prints have been left in our hearts forever.

Now Charlie, the ten year old rescued Golden Lab has come to be a part of the continuing Old Fella story. (*Note, Charlie took his journey to Rainbow Bridge unexpectedly September 30, 2008)Suzie continues to charm her way into our hearts with her antics as she has grown from a puppy into a young lady. Togther they will carry on the Old Fella legacy. Come join us in their daily lives and be a part of the best feel good thread in RV.NET history. The legacy lives on.

Wow!

What a story!! I just finished it from start to finish!

It was like a book that couldn't be put down; but it was put down only to feed my furkids--I delayed dinner for me!

Richard, I do have a question for you; what did your vet say about all the interest in Old Fella? I doubt if any vet has had such a grass roots "star" in their clinic!

I hope that there will be more rescues because of "Old Fella"

I have been following this story from the begining and must say it really hits home for me as we also took in a stray almost three years ago that was under-nourished and abused. He immediatly took to my wife and adopted her as his Mom.we just didn't have the heart to put him up for adoption,so we kept him and he has grown into a very loving and beautiful(although very large)dog and although we have had to readjust our lives at times to accomadate the dog we still can't imagine being without him.
Dixieflyer I want to commend you on your perseverence in catching and helping Old Fella and giving him a loving home.I hope you two have very many happy years together and keep us entertained with your adventures.

I have been following this story from the beginning and it so touched me that I forwarded the link to it to my non-RV'ing, but pet owning friends, and even some who I just knew would enjoy the story! I was right, everyone is coming back day after day to keep tabs on Old Fella. Now here's the kicker, two of our friends called us about Rv'ing! I think they're really interested after seeing how many wonderful people responded to this story and what a wonderful "community" we are. The story just keeps getting better and better. Rich, there is surely a special place in heaven for you! I'm going to see what I can do to make sure we're at the rally. Our little furkid would love to meet Old Fella.

Ok Folks, here are a couple links to campgrounds in Branson MO.
one is to KOA Kampground the other is to ABC campground.
CamperCarl sent an email to KOA checking with them about holding the Rally there also. We will be checking with both for dates, posting dates, and then we can vote on which campground and what dates seem to work best. So far seems everyone is in favor of June which should work with most everyone. ok here are the links.

Hi All,
Rich wanted me to tell you this story. I am in Albuquerque New Mexico. Some of us wanted to go to church this morning. Well, we found a little church near the campground and we found out what time services were and went. the topic of the sermon was about Old Fella and the out pouring of love for the people that answered the call of help from this net. It was great to see the news is getting around everywhere we go now.

Old Fella is going on his first camping trip with us October 21st. We are going to Cherokee KOA in Cherokee, NC. This is our annual trip we make with the kids and grandkids. I feel confident he will be fine as he has adapted so quickly. He is a gentleman on the leash, he likes the camper and he travels well. So if any are going to be in Cherokee, NC that weekend be sure and look us up.

He is becoming more and more sociable everyday. He is now seeking my company and he wants his belly rubs. He is beginning to come when he is called, but I don't trust him off the leash just yet. But there is one thing for sure, when he looks at me now there is that I love you look in his eyes. We will stay at the campground thru Sunday and go home on Monday. So be sure to come by and say hello.

Rich,
This has been such a nice heart wrenching saga and such a herculean gesture on you part, I would darn near drive down to your campground on that weekend just to shake your hand and give you a pat on the back for being such a kind and caring person.
I would probably need to mortgage the farm in order to buy the diesel just to get there from Kansas, but it would be about worth it.
My hat goes off to you. You should be in line for some kind of an award for kindness.
Thanks again for sharing your experiences.

Just got back from camping with the Ohio Rally clan and Old Fella was one of the topics of conversation. Susanne's article has tears streaming down my face. Everytime Chloe does something goofy or just gets so excited to go on hikes or just rests her head on my shoulder, I cannot even begin to imagine what she went through surviving on the streets in the middle of winter. Nor can I even bear the thought that this loving, gentle, goofy creature was about to be put down. It appears that Old Fella was quite well known about town and that probably has lead to his survival. Please give him a kiss on the top of his head and let him know how lucky he is. And I thank you once again for what you have done.

WE haven't had him around children since he left the campground. But I was told by Nina that Old Fella loved the kids. They were the only ones that he would allow to touch him. I am looking forward to his going as he has learned to be quite the ham, especially around the ladies. He is so totally different since he has been with us, he doesn't meet a stranger. The shyness is gone and the trust is ever so deep.

We will be camping at Walnut Hills Campground near Staunton, Va. Oct. 14-20. That is only a couple mountains north of you. We had talked of going to Cherokee this year but we decided to stay in VA. If anyone will be camping there at that time, please let me know. I would love to meet you.

When I was little my parents took us to the Blue Ridge and Smokies every year. My brother and I loved to go to Cherokee. There was a campground there that had little log cabins for rent and we stayed several nights there each year. That was a long time ago. I suppose it has really changed.

How is Old Fella with your grandkids. He is so gentle, I am sure he will do very well with them and other children. Hope you have a great time. Let us know how well you do at the casinos.
