A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Went camping this weekend at a campground on the lake, had not been there for a few years. Once there I began to walk around looking at the different sites when I noticed a very old dog. He just lay there until I got too close then he got up on three legs and hobbled away. Just judging I would say he is at least 11 years old. Well back to my story. The next afternoon he wanders into camp and just sits there looking. He looked so sad, so the wife got a bowl of our dog's food and put it down for him and he came over and ate. He then walked over to our dog and the two of them sniffed each other over and then they lay down together for the rest of the afternoon. That night he disappeared.
The next morning he was back and was a little more receptive of me. I looked at his injured leg and found that half of his rear foot was gone. It had healed and was not causing any problem except that he was walking on the stub that was left with no foot pad which causes him to limp. His front teeth were gone except for one canine tooth and it looked decayed. His eyes were tired looking and showing his age. He spent the rest of the day just laying around looking for a handout and by afternoon the campground host came around and saw him. I enquired about the dog and was told he had been there for three years and that most of the campers were tolerant of him and gave him food.
So what to do? Do you pick him up and bring him home or do you let nature take it course. He can't harm anyone, he has no teeth and he isn't a nuisance unless you don't like dogs, and no one seems to mind him being there. He is gentle and likes other animals as seen by his interaction with our dog. He still would not let me touch him but he would eat from my hand. Enough said, what would you do???

On June 28th 2008 Old Fella passed away of complications caused by bone cancer. Fella spent almost three years with his new family and became the icon of rescued old stray dogs. He will be greatly missed but his foot prints have been left in our hearts forever.

Now Charlie, the ten year old rescued Golden Lab has come to be a part of the continuing Old Fella story. (*Note, Charlie took his journey to Rainbow Bridge unexpectedly September 30, 2008)Suzie continues to charm her way into our hearts with her antics as she has grown from a puppy into a young lady. Togther they will carry on the Old Fella legacy. Come join us in their daily lives and be a part of the best feel good thread in RV.NET history. The legacy lives on.

I keep thinking I will get used to this new forum but I really don't like it.  I used to frequent the other areas of the forum but now only come to this thread.  Glad some people are getting new logins and are able to post again.

Good Morning FOOFs.

I hope everyone had a nice Christmas and New Years.  I haven't been on a trip in the motorhome since the first weekend of December when we had a long weekend in Jetty Park on the other coast.  We are planning a trip superbowl weekend to Margaritaville rv resort.  It will probably be our only time going there as it's very expensive.  It was the only RV place I could find that had availability.

This will be the last trip we take before I have to replace the tires on the motorhome.  I still have the original tires from when we bought the motorhome new in June of 2017.  They only have 25,000 miles on them and the motorhome has been stored in an enclosed garage it's whole life so the only time the tires see the outside world is when we are using it.  Hopefully it won't cost me too much $$$.

The fur babies are doing well.  Pinto, ZuZu and Monty all had a nice Christmas.  ZuZu is getting fat and Monty is getting old. He is old but he gets around really good and looks great.  He has passed his 13 1/2 birthday in December.

Hope everyone is doing well.

I'm spending less and less time trying to figure out this new format. I was glad to see a post from you, Burch. . . . gave me hope I might find some "old" friends after all. I joined the Coach House club and they have two campouts a year. One was in September in Natchez. I had just gotten home from my summer travels to Indiana. I had to wait out Idalia before coming home, so I got home in time to check on stuff, unpack and repack and head to Natchez. Since I was never the navigator I thought (assumed. . . and you know what that means) Natchez was maybe 400 miles from central Florida. Yeah, that wasn't right. So I took three days to get there. Had a wonderful time meeting other Coach House people and enjoyed all the events they had planned. On the way back, I stopped in Zachary, LA, near Baton Rouge, to see Terry's cousin/wife. We used to stop by their place twice every year, going to/from our place in Texas. From there I came back home in 2 days. I spent the next month trying to trap the mouse I believe I picked up in Virginia in September. He was a smart one, but eventually I caught him in a trap, but he wasn't dead. I left him lay in the drive with a bucket over him and he expired by the next morning, so I threw him in the canal. I don't think I have anymore in there, but I cleaned and disinfected thoroughly and then found more places he had been. So everything is again cleaned and disinfected and no more evidence. I have a trip the end of January to go to Nokomis to the mother ship and have some window leaks fixed. Then in February and March I have campouts with the Florida FunSeekers, mostly made up of people in my community. Thought it was time to get to know more of them. I may have told you all this before, but I can't find anything on here. . .

So happy to see a few find this website.  The only thing I can say good about it is......it sends me an email when someone posts, so I can find it again.  My husband has retired and we are stuck at home with critters in freezing Indiana.  Just waiting for Spring.  I had to set up an new account so my name has changed.  I feel like I have to post every now and then so it keeps doing it.  I hate winter.

What a pain!  I was never able to get my old RV.net account to work so I had to create a new account.  Then, I couldn't figure out how to get to the most current messages.   I do not like this new format but at least the thread seems to be intact.

Hi Metalgator 71, Yes it definitely takes a while to get used to the new format and workflow. If you haven't already figured out how to find the new messages there are two ways I use that seems to help.

  • At the top left of any page click on the words Goodsam. This will take you to the home page.
  • On the home page scroll down and on the right side you will see a box that says  Unread Posts
  • At the bottom of the unread posts box you can click on View All (I like to right click on View All and open in a new tab)

On the new posts window, just under the words Unread Discussions, you can click on and display just the headings on the screen or click on Posts and see every post on the screen. I prefer Discussions as it's much cleaner.

Alternatively I also created a bookmark to the unread posts and put it on my Bookmarks Toolbar so I have quicker access. Link

As far as not being able to login with your old user name are you making sure to first click on RV.Net user button? From there you should be able to put in your original user name and then click on the forgot password link. If so make sure you check your email spam folder to see if the reset password link is in there.

If you're still interested in getting your old login back I'm adding the administrator to this response to see if he can help if needed. @Community Alumni

Hey @Metalgator71

I am going to send you a DM right now. Happy to help you get your old RV.net account back!

Thanks,

I click on the RV.Net button.  It doesn't take my password so I do the forgot password link.  I get an email and then click on the link and put in a new password (that passes the password requirements) and then I get an error message that says something about I don't have permission to do this function.  I have been trying to get logged on since this new site started.  I finally gave up and created a new account (added 71 to the end of my old username) just so I could get logged in.  Very frustrating.

I went through a very similar experience.  It's disheartening to know that many, many others did not and will not persevere and make it to this new, "improved" site.โ˜น๏ธ

Hey @DOTLDaddy@Metalgator71, and anyone else who might be experiencing the password reset error issues.

This is an issue we are aware of are actively working with our provider to get corrected. I have a list of a couple of users who have already reached out. I now have added @Metalgator71 to that list. If you know of anyone else who is experiencing this please tell them to DM me or email community@goodsam.com. Our top priority is getting this error corrected.

Thank you again for your patience with us as we work through these issues.

RIP, old rv.net.  We all miss you.โ˜น๏ธ

I was wondering if you'd ever make it over here, Burch.  I don't think many of the Old Fella faithful have, it's just to cumbersome and user unfriendly.

I fear, after trying to navigate and browse this new website design, that many, many people will give up on following the FOOF topic.  So many features of the old design are gone, including all of my past PM's, sent and received.โ˜น๏ธ

I'm still here, still trying to make sense of this new format, which is not a very good one.  I've found that with the Sort being on Newest to Oldest, I still have to scroll to the bottom, then click on page 1 to get to the newest posts.  Now that I figured that out, I can keep up...

"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." -- Mahatma Gandhi

Czarny, black cat
Rainbow Bridge: Spotacus, Alexander the Grrreat, and so very many more

โ€œI still have to scroll to the bottom, then click on page 1 to get to the newest posts.โ€

Bingo! Thatโ€™s the detail I was missing. Clumsy but it works.

Thanks!
