Denver to Lusk, SD to Rapid City

How is US 85 from Cheyenne up to Rapid City? Towing 28’ travel trailer.

The trip up 85 was fantastic! Very windy, but manageable and excellent roads. Beautiful scenery and easy driving. Thanks to all who responded with very helpful information! Thom02099, your info and fuel info was spot on and very helpful, I appreciate it.

Thanks, this is gold! Great info on fuel which is something I was concerned about. Looking forward to heading that way soon.

As others have said, the road is fine, nothing out of the ordinary as to condition. It is, however, very lonely and open drive, with no cell service to speak of except in the very few actual towns. Lots of ranch/grazing land along the route, coming out of Cheyenne to Torrington, and on up through Lusk to Newcastle. Fuel in Torrington and Lingle, fuel in Lusk, and fuel in Edgemont (if you go east) or Newcastle if you continue north. That’s the route we take going up into Custer and Deadwood. Will be making the trip again at the end of June, it’s a very good highway to take. We tow a 32’ trailer up that way.

I don't recall that highway but we have been all over WY highways and they are uniformly in pretty good condition. Mostly good two lane roads. We pull a 30 ft TT
