Canadian Tire has a digital temperature gun on sale at 80% off ($19.99 regular $99.99). It has good online ratings. Has anyone used one for RVing? I'm thinking it would be great for checking the hubs and tires.

Ok, so I tried my Craftsman digital temp gun on Thanksgiving, Had to get an early start because of a birthday/Thanksgiving day feast/open house. My job was to fry two fifteen pound birds. I had two propane cylinders and I knew one was close to empty and the other was close to full,,(by weight) I had the close to empty hooked up to the fryer already but didnt know exactly how much propane I had,, SO after reading this thread I wanted to try your idea of using the digital temp gun.

Worked great!! first tank I started my reading from the top of tank to the bottom,, top of tank read 34.6F, close to the -1/4 mark it read 35.2F. As I used the propane and the liquid turned to gas it boils,, after a few minutes of
burn time I could see a definitive liquid line on the tank,, top was 34+F while just below the 1/4 tank it read 36+F,, As time went by the differential got higher and I could really tell the tank level.. Also, as I burned more gas I could see a condensation line forming, until the tank went empty,, Swapped out tanks and again the test worked perfectly!!!

So,, next week when I pick up my trailer form storage I will measure and draw a line so as I know my current level!!!

Thanks for the tip!! That was fun!!!( gave me something to putz around with while the birds cooked)!!

A little knowledge about Emissivity will help with the accuracy of ones infrared temperature measurements.

I have one from Sears and use it at every stop when traveling... Like stated , there is usually too many variances , so I also look for extreme differences....found that I had rotor hanging up before a trip once.... Saved me a Ton of road issues...Joe

My buddy has used one to fry fish for years. Should work well with the turkey.

Thanks for that suggestion! Never thought of that.

Thats a great idea,,, will try that in the morning,, frying two turkeys,, will check level periodically,,, should work like a charm!!!

Good price. That is what I paid for Harbor Freight Tool cheapie, but it works OK. They come in very handy. Have seen tire temps over 200 (second most hottest day we had last summer). All of the tires, thought it was a problem, turns out no, not unusual. And not more than 15 degrees difference in tire temps. Also comes in handy if you do any dutch oven cooking, play laser tag with cat, Have also seen on here people us it to check trans temp if gauge not working and check radiator to see if it is plugged up or thermostat maybe not opening. Also proved to myself just how much less LED's are then regular bulbs.
Would of got one a lot sooner if I'd known what fun....

Mine does go thru batteries faster than I think it should

Bought my first one 30+ years ago for $90 (Rayteck) and it found a engine overheating problem in minutes after weeks of trying to solve the problem. I've used it several time today (yes it's still working) checking temperatures in my house. The temp reading that blows me away is pointing it up on a clear day in the summer and getting a reading of -35F degrees... 30,000'. Currently it's too cold and pointed up it's out of it's temp range. I own three and they are one of my most often used tool.

Been using an infrared thermometer for 7 years.
Great for check of tire thread temps, hubs, brake rotors etc.

Distance from object being measured will affect temp (wider vs narrow beam)

I try to hold it 8" from area on each tire/hub so that I can compare the different tires/hubs.
Tire thread....I aim for flat area between threads...two spots
Hubs.....I aim at the transition between drum face and hub and then 2" in from grease cap for two readings
Rotors....on truck I aim just below caliber

Do a quick check at each stop. Sunny side tires/hubs can be higher than shady side. I look for big spread between set on same side.
Is it time for your medication or mine?

We have one from Princess Auto, used regularly for tires, hubs etc. When checking tire temps, don't be surprised at variations in temps from side to side (sun/shade) TOOO many variables. Just watch for extreme changes. Seen tire temps as high as 165F. Pavement temp was even hotter.
