From Charlotte to Boone, NC

We're headed to Honey Bear Campground near Boone, NC this weekend for the first time. Map is giving us two options into Boone from Charlotte. Which should we take for the EASIEST route? We're pulling a 26'TT with our Suburban. It usually does fine, but steep winding roads give me the willies 🙂 Options look like 77N to 40W to 321N OR 77N to 421N. Is one better than the other? Thanks for any advise!

We just go up 321. Because for us it is MUCH closer, and the road is way easier than it use to be. But then. I have been towing up 321 for 30 years.

And yes. Honey bear is a nice CG IF you get one of the good sites. Not all sites are good. The RV sites in C up to the creek bridge. and D are the only ones we would consider using.

I77 to 421 is what I would consider the only option, you are going to a great campground owned a very nice couple.

We stayed in Honey Bear last year. Not sure if they are done with construction on US321 now or not, but if steep winding roads give you the willies (they give my wife the same), you definitely want to use the US421 route (it is straighter and 4 lanes all the way into the area).

Watch the switchback curve on the road (Poplar Grove Rd S) heading back to the campground. We had to swing our dually and 40' fiver all the way over into the opposing lane to make it and found a truck and trailer coming from the other direction (it's a somewhat blind curve). Fortunately, they were ready and stopped so we could finish swinging around it.
