Going into North Myrtle Beach from 95 North

I posted a question a few weeks back about going from FLA. to North Myrtle Beach...

The answers were somewhat divided with some stating 95N to Florence and 501 into 22... and the other half taking 378-501-31-22

On mapquest its only showing a difference of 13 miles , but almost 2 hours LONGER taking 378 ??

Can any of you who take either tell me the good-bad-and ugly of either way ?

On edit - - I will be traveling from Florida UP 95 North

Route 17 let me tell you about my using it to MB I was following a SC car road goes from 60 to 40 or 45 it was very dark however in the distance you can see a traffic light then speed limit goes down, however on one stretch no speed limit sign came into view but in my rear window a car come out of the median then I rounded a curve and there was a traffic light about 3 tenths of a mile ahead then the red lights went on and he stopped both of us for my first speeding ticket in 50 years that happened 4 years ago never used 17 after that so be warned.

I take 501 to 378 to 95. MB to Jacksonville, 5 1/2hrs. by car.

Just go by the traffic on I95 then. Last time I traveled it, the opposite direction was always near a crawl for miles and miles. Luckily I was always going against the traffic jam. At least I know all of the adjacent roads and can get off at the next opportunity to jump over a road or two and make time. Ready to move out of SC, but sometimes there are advantages to being in one town for 50 years.

Now what you mean about things changing, my wife and I started camping at MBSP in '91. Even the kids didn't want to fight the traffic after about '05. Only exception was if we were going to Medevil Times, not for the show as much as the food.

That is why I avoid Myrtle Beach as much as possible, especially from April to October. Where in MB are you headed as that does make a difference?

Will be at M.B.T.P. Been going the past 25 years the same week or 2 every year... It has changed big time~!!! I was not sure if it was worth looking into running east from 95 instead of north on 17 . . Once close I will hop on 31/22 to the Super Wally world . .

Between those two choices I would take 501 / 22.

I think 95 in SC is really boring so I take 17N (at about exit 32 on 95 I think), just after coming into SC. There is a bypass around Charleston. You hit 31 bypass around MB as you get into MB. Worst traffic is from around Lichfield / Pawleys Island till you hit 31 bypass. This route is shortest I think, but slower. I just like driving it instead of I95.

It depends on I95 traffic. If it is moving along, stay on it as long as possible. If it is slow going, get off and take the backroads, at least for a few miles around the traffic jam. Just an FYI, from exit 33 to Santee you can jump on Hwy 15. From Santee north to Exit 134, you can jump on Hwy 301.

Hwy 501 is heavier traffic but dual lane road. Hwy 378 is a nice road through some pretty sections but single lane road.

Another option if you have the time is to jump off on Hwy 17 taking it up to through Charleston and Georgetown. Will be a bit longer, but much nicer now that the have the section from Beaufort to Jacksonboro dualed. If you want to go this route, split the trip up into two days by staying at the Oaks CG south of Charleston.

I liked the 501 route because it is a very wide road and works good for the big rigs but this dumps into the south side of Myrtle Beach...

I haven't really looked at the road for RVs coming in from the North... In our truck by itself we always start heading for the coast around WILSON NC from I95 and end up on US17 north of Myrtle Beach. Probably not a good route for big RV rigs however as it goes thru several small towns...
