Break out Google Maps, and go from Cape Cod across to Hartford, CT, then down across the Tappan Zee Bridge (north of NYC)....or across up at Newburg, NY to get further west before you head south.
Only you know just how much space you want between you and NYC....and then there are the tunnels down through Baltimore, so you may want to stay west of that too.
Get out some maps, and start looking for a route you'd like to take...and then see how much more time it's going to take you (and cost you in the extra gas:() to see which way you go.
I-95 really isn't all that bad, but it really depends on the time of day that you are transiting it.....you want to avoid rush-hour times during weekdays.
Having driven around Atlanta on a couple of occasions...I'd take NYC before doing that again....but then, I drive through NYC after midnight most of the time:)
