Headed out to Moab, UT

From Lake Tahoe next week for about 10 days. We are heading out on Hwy 50 to 70 in Utah, and not sure how we want to come back. Does anyone have any "must do" routes not on Hwy 70 you recommend? We've done the usual Escalante/St George route, and was wondering if going north up to SLC from green river would be worthwhile.

Don't know much about the area between green river and SLC.

Great call on Sac pass. Beautiful, free, unpopulated
New blm campground on east side of pass. Small fishing pond, go up road to equestrian sites. This will be a regular stopping place for us...unless it's full

There were several decent pull off's, including BLM camp spots between Delta Utah and Great Basin National Park. Mostly desert camping, some along side dried up lakes.

We stayed right in Delta in the visitor center parking lot along Main Street for the night without issue.

It was sun set as we drove through the area, along with snow flurries, so we didn't attempt the off road camp spots due to the wet ground.

We just made the trip recently. I would suggest staying near Austin Nevada, could be fun staying over in Austin if like old town charm, and 1900's saloon and so on. Lots of history along the entire route, many turn off's and camp spots.

Near Utah state line is a nice but smaller National Park with exploration of caves. (weather conditions prevent us from staying there)

*Correction. Great Basin National Park, it's in Nevada, close to the Utah State line. They may have hook ups.

hi all! a great read! I'm looking forward to our trip from the Reno area back to Colorado along 50... and taking the advise here on some local routes... What are your favorite overnights along this "loneliest road"? We fine with a dry camp with our 23' Lance TT, but may like the comfort of a 30 amp to battle the heat in early June.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I'll try some of those suggestions.

North out of Green River and over Soldier Summit is a great drive, and nice climb, but a good highway to to the top. Lots of vistas to look over.

We just did Lake Tahoe, Austin and Highway 50 a couple of weeks ago, mostly in snow, but the roads were fine. Always a nice drive. Peaceful.

If your in Green River, stop by Ray's Tavern for the best burger and coldest beer around.

Enjoy Moab, a regular destination for us, 90 miles from home.

On the way out, if you've already done the US 50 through NV and UT, consider taking NV 722 into Austin instead of US 50. Might be 15 minutes longer but a prettier route going through the Desatoya Mountains instead of out in the flats. Also, instead of US 50 across UT, consider turning south at Baker and taking UT 21 to I-15 then north to I-70. Just a little different route. Spend a little time investigating the mining ruins around Frisco, UT if you want a break from the drive.

For the return, have you done the more southerly route? West from Cedar City on UT 56 to NV 319 then south on US 93 to NV 375 to US 6, etc. Kind of way out there. Cathedral Gorge SP is just north of Panaca. NV 375 is also known as the Extraterrestrial Highway (kind of near Area 51). In Rachel, you'll pass the Little A'Le'Inn. All sorts of ET type souvenirs.

The route up US 6 is heavily travelled. I've never done the UT 10/31 route but it does look interesting. The downside of both of these is ending up on I-80 across NV. Maybe is just after driving it 100 times, I'm tired of it. Heck, one time we even headed south out of Dugway past Fish Springs NWR, through Callao, then south Gandy on down to US 50 near the UT/NV border. Long ways and lots of dirt roads.

There are a lot of beautiful scenic roads in Utah. You could head towards Tropic on 24 and 12.

Then 89 and 14 to Cedar City. Then Panaco, NV to Tonapah to Lee Vining.

Just remember; 50 looks completely different going the other way.

Green River to Price is desert, then you cross the Wasatch Plateau and enter the Wasatch Mtns over Soldier Summit. A nice pretty drive. Plenty of services in Green River and Price both. Easy drive although the stretch above Helper is curvy a bit and climbs but nothing bad. A lot of it is 4 lane. Once in SLC, I-15 is horrendous most of the time, unless you can go thru on a Sunday morning. It's always under construction.

I might add, we've been to all the usual places, and we are looking for something different, like taking highway 6 out of Green river, north. Or maybe Highway 10 to 31 towards SLC. Just want to do something different.
