Hwy 2 Glacier NP - Sault Ste Marie Ont.

We are planning a West Coast to East Coast (Vancouver Island to the Maritimes) and plan to travel both sides of the border. Our thoughts are to travel mainly Hwy 2 from Glacier National Park to Sault Ste Marie. We are pulling a 5th wheel. Any thoughts on this route versus travelling I-90 and I-94? Time not an issue. Thanks in advance!

Last summer we took US 2 from Duluth to Glacier. Very pleasant drive, good road, little traffic, lots of four lane.

Fort Peck Corp of Engineers campground at Fort Peck, Montana is a winner! Huge sites with lawns. A nice resting place for a couple nights.

Have fun with geocaching. We've done a lot of it and it takes you to places you'd never know about. 🙂

Veebyes is right. Have done Hwy 2 east & west bound between the UP and Everett WA probably 10 + times. It's a great ride - better than any interstate. Finding gas and diesel is easy. Many many many places to camp. Have never had to stay in a motel though there are a number of decent cgs associated with motels. Lots of really good mom & pop eateries.

Thanks, naturist, for the information. Sounds like it makes sense to get on to Hwy2 at Everett WA.

Took that route 7 years ago, and except for an approximately 10 mile stretch at the border of ND and MT, the route was a delightful, mostly 2-lane road. I'm sure that the dirt track for that stretch has been converted to the 4-lane highway it looked like they were building.

We went all the way from Sault St Marie to Redmond, WA, stopping at Glacier, I might add. That is some of the flatest land on the planet, so you should have no trouble at all. It does start getting mountainous in western Montana, but we had no trouble dragging our TT through there.

The one thing challenging about it was the almost continuous headwind we encountered headed west. But it is a great trip, and a wonderful adventure. BTW, we stayed on night in Williston, and with the decline of the oil boom, there might actually be RV sites available there now.

Thanks, agesilaus, we are mainly wondering about road conditions. As for boredom, geocaching takes care of that! Thanks for heads up on cell phone reception.

We drove about half of that from central ND to Glacier on Hwy 2. We liked it, lots of empty land with wide open vistas. I have heard some complain about being bored so I guess it depends on you. One warning you will have -no- cell phone signal unless you are in one of the small towns along the way. The road itself was in good condition, mostly a good two lane highway. Oh yes, campgrounds are not to be found in profusion so plan your stops ahead. We had to motel it one night.
