Has anybody noticed how bad 40 has gotten? I wonder when they might fix it. I've gotten to the point where the loop from Kingman to Sleigman is the way to go.

Good, 65mph speed limit most the way, no bad hills, takes just a little longer, but not much, relaxing drive, good road as of last time we drove.

We traveled on Sunday so ran into no real backups. There will be some one lane sections.

Just did the EB I40 yesterday. Thought I70 WB in Indiana was bad but this road takes the prize. Instead of caution signs for slick roads they should just put "Rough Road" signs every couple of miles.

tunafisher: we're headed east on I-40 from Las Vegas this week. Considering the AZ-66 loop from Kingman to Seligman. How is AZ-66 for 34' Class A towning? Any steep grades? Other considerations?

We came east on I40 a couple of days ago and there is a major repaving project underway about 10 miles east of Kingman. The eastbound lanes are reduced to a single lane, they are repaving the left lane), and the back up had us crawling for half an hour. The right lane on this stretch has already been repaved. We turned south on 93 but there were signs warning of additional, probably similar, road construction ahead on eastbound 40.

Most of the backup was caused by the chuckleheads that roar up the left lane, ignoring the "Left Lane Closed Ahead" signs and then jam into the right lane just before the left lane disappears. This brought the right lane to a virtual standstill until a trucker (that I would love to buy a beer), saw the problem and took action. He simply straddled the line between the left/right lanes eliminating the chuckleheads ability to jump the line. All traffic immediately began to move more smoothly/quicker and we were soon through the construction zone. I gave the trucker a big thumbs up wave as he passed.

ADOT is in the process of paving 135 miles of I40 - over the next 3 years (in a dozen segments). Cost is about $1 million per mile.

Repaving projects of existing highways are typically done in segments to minimize traffic disruptions. You wouldn't want to drive the whole way on a 2 lane detour, would you? 10 miles at a time is enough.

Repaving competes with other projects for $, e.g. bridge repairs, landslide repairs, congestion relief. Rough pavement may be a nuisance for drivers, but it seldom blocks or even delays traffic.
Thanks for the link, good to know. As for us it's sections 1-4, so if there on time looks like by 2016 I'll use it again instead of my loop on old 66.

Those trucks pay millions of dollars in taxes. What we need is for the state to use the money for what is was intended, fix the roads. They seem to find other things to use it for.

You are correct about the taxes by truckers but the problem is the states allow trucks to run weights way beyond what the roads were designed for. If we went back to the weights allowed in the 60's we would have much less road damage.

The reconstruction of the roads to meet the current weight allowance would run into the trillion range not millions.

To built a Interstate today would be a couple million per mile.

I travel that stretch of I40 a couple of times a year. It's been bad for the last 10+ years with very little effort to repair it. I suggest you send ADOT a note about how bad it is, it may not help but it's a way to get out your frustrations a little bit. I always get back a note that they are "working on it", ya right...

I go that way often and I just hate the fact it's so bad these days. I really don't have a other way to go except the way I said in the original post.
