Iowa to Buffalo, WY route suggestions

We are on our first post-retirement road trip. We will be leaving the Des Moines area and plan to stay in Buffalo, WY for several days. My possible routes are I29 north to I90 or stay on I80 thru Nebraska and head north from Cheyenne.

We have driven the I90 route before but never been thru NE. The only thing we had planned to visit in NE was the arch/museum in Kearney.

So I am looking for suggestions for the better of the two options from folks who may have traveled both.

Avoided going up I29 because of the flooding issues. Just made the I80 trip across Iowa and Nebraska to Cheyenne. Is was a good trip, with the road surfaces good most of the way and traffic not that bad.

Never mind how to get there. When you do get there, stop by the Winchester Steak House for a great meal, and the Rexall store downtown for a real old-fashioned chocolate malt. Your tongue will want to slap you in the face to make sure you get every drop.

There is also Fort Kerney State Park which has a nice campground and a Cabela's in Kearney. If you take US-26 West at Exit 126 there is Guernsey State Historical Park along the old Oregon Trail and nearby Register Cliff. There is a nice campground at the state park as well.
Safe travels!

Got to Souix City and I-29 North was a closed due to flooding. Detours not well marked so we ended up using 75 North to Luverne, MN to connect with I90. Made for a long trip to Mitchell, SD.

your route was probably not much longer than if you had gone up I-35. and you can now claim to be one of those frequent posters here that "I don't want to take the IS, I want a back roads trip so I can see the country". ๐Ÿ™‚ although all you got to see were corn fields and pig lots.

Update on 29, the missouri river could flood this weekend so parts of 29 north of Omaha could be closed

I'd run up 29 to 90 and over myself. 80 is a horrible truck route. probably cooler up North too. I thought parts of 29 had flooding damage but that was quite a while back.
