We just do I95 going north. Be aware of road conditions... I've given up trying to estimate if they will be good or bad. Many times if you ask on these forums right before you go, you can get good updated road condition info. Speaking of road conditions -- watch out for bridges. I am not sure of the reasoning, but recently it seems that the highway departments all over the Northeast beautifully repave the highway, except for bridges! They seem to enjoy leaving the bridges unpaved, in really bad condition, for fun. Just be ready for cruising on a smooth highway and then hitting bumps over a bridge (I assume there is some reason for this, I just can't figure it out).
Have you been to Acadia before? It is pretty cool to go to the top of Cadillac Mountain to see the sunrise (first spot on the continental USA to see sunrise). Also, you can night hike - really neat to go see (and hear) Thunder Hole at night.
