Planning a trip from Alabama to Grand Canyon in October. We want to stop at BigBend for a few days on way west. We will be pulling 36 ft wheel trailer. Would like a route staying off interstate as much as possible.

US 90 to get to Big Bend. When you leave Big Bend take US 385 or 67 depending on where you are in Big Bend and head up to Fort Stockton and catch US 285 to Roswell, NM. Then US 380 to Socorro, NM and US 60 to US 260 in Show Low, AZ. Take 260 over to I-17 and use it to go up to Flagstaff or stay on 260 to 89A and drive up through Sedona to Flagstaff and catch 180 to the canyon there.

In October, you'll have to keep an eye on the weather forecast as snow storms are possible. Take 90 to Van Horn where you'll hook up on I-10 to Deming. The weather will dictate where you go from there. If the weather is good, US180 through Silver City, NM and up through ShowLow to Holbrook is a scenic route with excellent roads. (mostly 2 lane blacktop) In Holbrook, there's a nice KOA. I would stay there for a couple days if possible. You'll be able to visit the Petrified Forest, Painted Desert and the TeePee Motel of C.A.R.S. fame in downtown Holbrook. Ask, and they'll let you tour one of the teepees. Winslow, stand on the corner of Eagles fame. Meteor Crater is good for a quick stop.

Take I-40 on to the Grand Canyon. Side trip, if you have time, to Sedona via Oak Creek Canyon is a beautiful trip. You probably won't want to take your rig on AZ89A.....good luck but watch the weather closely....Dennis

The problem is Texas and between about Van Horn and El Paso the route is I10. I would stay on I10 till Lordsburg NM. Spending the night at the Walmart in Deming NM or one of the 2 state parks in the area. From Lordsburg take US70 to Globe and then SR88 to lake Roosevelt and camp in the Tonto National Forest $3.00 with the Geezer pass and pay at ranger station in Roosevelt. 3-4 nice CG we prefer the Frazier Horse camp. Nice pull through sites.
Then State route 188 to state route 260 to I17 or you can take a small detour to Sedona by taking SR 179 instead of I17 or continue on to Flagstaff on I17
if you decide on Walmart PM me for tips on where it is Quietest. There are also about 7-8 commercial CG in Deming

We will be doing most of this route about October 23
