Utah 14 from I 15 to 89

We want to go from Springdale, UT to Bryce Canyon. Taking I 15 north to Hwy 14 over to Hwy 89 looks much shorter than the online mapping that wants to send us farther north to Hwy 20.

We will be driving a 40 Class A with a tow.

Is 14 not advisable for our rig?

Thanks in advance.

JohnG3 - It looks like you have enough info here to make an informed decision. I'm going to close this thread for now. Shoot me a PM or click "Notify Moderator" if you want the thread reopened.

A guy from Morro Bay probably isn't a stranger to driving steep or twisty roads. The vacation path should be fun and safe though.

Enjoy your trip and happy trails to you.

We've done this before, weather it be Hwy 62, 550 or some other crooked Hwy it seems a big MH shouldn't do it. So maybe size does matter hahaha.

I've not gotten away with anything, I rely on my driving skill to keep me out of trouble. No one knows the driving skill of the other driver, so your opinion is the one that counts. I'm sure the many folks that drive this route every year, a lot liked it and a lot didn't, but to assume others had gotten away with it coming from one who drives a motorhome the size of a 1959 Buick stationwagon seems a bit much.

Just because you "can" do something does not mean it is a good idea. The Utah Department of Transportation prohibits any vehicle {or combination thereof} greater than 65' on highway 14 and for very good reasons. At 64' you are legal, just barely, but double towing your rig probably entails enchroaching on the double yellow. The OP would be close at best depending on the overall length of his Toad.

Folks over the double yellow hit a nerve with me as three times in the last year I have rounded a tight curve only to find a rig smaller than yours well into my lane. Twice on my motorcycle I was able to bail for the shoulder and once in my Class C came within inches of a head on. A short drive north to highway 20 or some other route eliminates what is at best a very bad idea and at worst a potential disaster.

For the record my 24' 6" Class C is the same size as a Crew Cab pick up with an 8' bed... I think the venerable Roadmaster was a tad bit shorter but then everyone knows... size doesn't matter. :B

As always... Opinions and YMMV.

Taking hwy 14 in a car is one thing, taking the motor home up there is something to really think about. It's a beautiful drive, but a lot of steep grades.

Not recommended as there is little if any shoulder for most of this route and it is very steep and narrow. If you have a problem everyone on the mountain gets to share in it. Staying inside the double yellow lines is not optional {or possible with 60'+ of rig}. Hope the OP thinks twice before going this way and the fact that others have gotten away with it should NOT be a factor. :S

On 14, going east from Cedar City, you will climb from aboot 5800ft elevation to just short of 10000ft at the highest. Curvy, 2 lane, good pavement. If you're good with that type of road, it is a great drive!! Much easier going down toward hwy 89. Went east to west pulling a 28ft trailer 3 yrs ago, didn't have any problems, but going down the west side into Cedar City required some skill on the brakes!!

It is a neat drive, and (again!), if you are comfortable with twisty, up and downhill driving in your rig, you should be fine. 89 north is a piece of cake!!

I've pulled double over it (see my profile 64'), it's a secondary Hwy so a litter better than your normal mountain road. Think of it as Hwy 41 only with nice views LOL
