Arizona State Parks

Hi everyone. I'll be spending the winter in Arizona (and maybe New Mexico?) and am partial to state parks. Can any of you good folks advise me on some of your favorites? Also, are there yearly passes that can help save you money, like the ones in Texas? Thanks for your help.

My .02 worth...

I see several people have suggested Buckskin State Park. We were NOT happy there. Water came out brown and foamy and never cleared up. Seemed expensive for a state park, especially since we didn't use the water. But, did have a hiking trail and free quail viewing.

Outside Tucson near the Desert Museum is a nice county park. (Pretty sure it was county. Wasn't Federal.)

Chiricahua was a nice park if you like easy hiking. But, sites are short. We're in a 24' rig and were parked in a (supposedly) 29' site and barely fit! Not a lot of spots there, get there early! Hiking trails from the campground and up the hill.

Karchner was good parking and a nice cavern.

BLM land around Quartzsite was pleasant. We were there "early and late" and avoided the huge crowds. Free parking. Nice desert. Hiking. Build a fire. Great place just to sit and chill out.

I forgot to add the old post link in my previous posting. It has been add, with a couple of others. Such as :C This One!.

Here's some info on the Las Cruces Area & Southern NM Mexican Food plus camping and attractions in the area. At least try a Green Chile Cheese Burger. Video

Taste of NM Pecans: Stahmanns or Salopek

Off I-10/I-25 on US 70 between Las Cruces & Alamogordo, White Sands Nat'l Monument & Alamogordo Area.

West of Las Cruces on I-10, In Deming there are Hidden Valley Ranch and Low Hi Ranch RV Park plus a few more: RV Park Reviews. 81 Palms (55 RV Park) is just off I-10 on the frontage road, west side of town.

Pancho Villa SP is south of Deming right on the Mexican Border. North of Deming towards Silver City is City of Rocks State Park. I've never been to Pancho Villa, but have enjoyed out trips & stays at City of Rocks.

New Mexico State Parks Best Camping Prices Around & No Day Fees on top of camping fees. NM Camping Fees

In Las Cruces: Hacienda RV Resort and Siesta RV Park are the easiest to get to, just of I-10 exit 140. Las Cruces KOA and Sunny Acres RV Park off I-10 exit 135. KOA on the mesa over looking the Mesilla Valley, Sunny Acres in the Valley.

In AZ: The Chiricahua National Monument by Wilcox is a neat place. The Arizona-Sonoran Desert Museum, just west of Tucson is really great (a zoo mainly without bars mostly) is over on the west side of Tucson by the Saguaro Nat'l Park and Old Tucson (the movie set/theme park). The Arizona-Sonoran Desert Museum is a must see for sure. Tucson Mountain Park and Gilbert Ray Campground in near by. I drove into the campground last spring, it wouldn't be a bad place to spend some time. I believe it is first come/first served which I prefer. Kartchner Caverns State Park from what I have read should also be a neat place, we have not gone yet.

My Daughter & family live in Tucson, which has proven to be a neat city, easy to get around in, with many things to see and do around it. Never camped there, however. But visit often. Maybe something in this will help out: ๐Ÿ™‚ Clicky.

Over in Texas, Big Bend Area, what I have on it.

It's also good to check park availability on the websites. We like to stay at Rockhound SP near Deming NM on our way through to southern California but find that it's full (at least the electrical sites) a lot of the time we go through there. You can reserve a site if you plan ahead a number of days. Part of the reason is that Rockhound has great park hosts who meet you at the campground entrance and guide you to a site, they also have less than around 30 campsites in the park.

My favorite AZ state parks are Catalina Mountains SP, Buckskin Mountain SP and Picacho Peak SP. Roper Lake SP is nice, too but it can be quite cold in winter.

Unlike Texas, AZ & NM state parks do not have an entrance fee on top of the camping fee.

At least NM doesn't, & believe AZ is the same. Texas pass is mainly for the daily fee, not camping.

NM State Park Fees are some of the lowest in the country. $10 camping without hookups, $4 more for electric. Fees NM State Parks

True it's generally cooler at times colder in NM than AZ depending on weather patterns, which seem to vary from year to year. However, it seems many winter using them each year. One would want to stay in the southern part of the state of course. Find a Park Map

This older post has a lot of scattered information on both AZ & NM (but some is from the northern part of the state) & TX maybe you can find something of use in it. Oophs! Forgot the old post :SInformation on Many Things.

Many Snowbirds use BLM land & campgrounds in AZ (as well as NM). Yuma has many. Quartzite has a lot. Around Ajo there seems to be places.

A Blogger from Ontario, The Bayfield Bunch spend their winters in the southwest. Often in AZ. Look into past post when they were in Ajo & others places in the state. They are more into dispersed campsites, however.

In NM, a few neat state parks: City of Rocks, Elephant Butte Lake & Caballo Lake, Leasburg Dam, Oliver Lee Memorial, Pancho Villa, Percha Dam, Brantley Lake & perhaps Rockhound would work as winter sites.

The BLM Valley of Fires Campground would make a nice place to spent time as well. An excellent campground.

As I mentioned, Many people winter in or around Ajo. .

We can have cold weather out here & it can snow, but in Las Cruces, normally, it wont last long, a day or two. Usually any snow will be gone the next day or so. About the same for Tucson but somewhat warmer.

The nights will have the temps dropping, often to freezing, but warming somewhat quickly in daytime. Sunny is our more normal, often even when it is pretty cold.

Tucson, I really like. Large place, but not a large city feel to it. Easy to get around, very nice, wide streets with pretty easy traffic flow. I haven't seem much of Phoenix to be honest.

Last winter was somewhat cooler one in AZ it seems & somewhat wet, but AZ gets more rain than southern NM. Two rainy seasons to our one. Hard to say what the next one will bring.

Tucson normally 10 degrees warmer than us (at about the same latitude) for it is a littler lower in elevation & Phoenix is even at a lower elevation than Tucson, although at a north latitude. Almost always warmer in Phoenix.

Phoenix seems to have more smog (seldom see it if ever in Tucson), more dust (Haboob Dust Storms), many more snowbirds with more snowbird parks, & more congestion or traffic than Tucson.

Another old Post, Some of the Same, but With Some New.

It has gorgeous views of the Sonoran desert, lovely sites, 9 miles to the city, power at every site and water every three sites. We've seen the same camp hosts there for several years. You can only stay seven days at a time, unfortunately. Don't tell anybody else about it though!

Yes, the only pass for the state parks is for day use, not camping.

Forgot about Gilbert Ray in Tucson - it's wonderful with lots of hiking trails in the area and the Desert Museum, for sure!

Here's a link to AZ State Parks:

Arizona State Parks

No, there is no camping pass for Arizona. New Mexico does have one but New Mexico during the winter months is very cold. We were going to try it one year and only lasted a couple weeks because of the cold and wind.

We love all the parks so it's best to try them all. We especially like Lost Dutchman in Apache Jct. (we volunteered there). Kartchner has the caverns to tour. Dead Horse Ranch in Cottonwood is great and it's easy to tour Sedona from there but Dec-Feb can be cold. Alamo Lake is remote but very pleasant (good paved road). You really can't go wrong.

You also might want to try the Phoenix Regional Parks which are like state parks - very scenic. Over by Roosevelt Lake are some extremely nice forest service campgrounds - Windy Hill and Cholla are great.

Have a great trip!
