We will be heading west in a few weeks and are planning on at least a few days in the Black Hills area. I've looked at some of the info on NF campgrounds and those could work, but also may try to find a nice disbursed site. Are there lots of decent options if we just go off on our own? Any suggestions on roads or areas to try?
We would like to end up within a half hour or so from Deadwood if we can.
Thanks!

We have camped in the hills, every year, since the late nineties. In that time we have been there for the rally at least five or six times. We camp in the southern hills for the most part. Although there clearly are accommodations in Sturgis and close by, that get a premium during the rally, your claim is more than a stretch. Not only have we never been overcharged in the hills due to the rally, as the rally is winding down, we have gotten some amazing buys at vendors who were dumping merchandise to prevent having to drag it away.

The only rally related issue we ever had was at a campground, a hundred miles away, where the manager refused to honor GS discounts, since it was rally week, and "we were luck to find a spot, at that price, since most campgrounds charge double this week", His campground was half empty at the time, and his game put $3 in his pocket, but earned him a negative review on rvparkreviews.com, and a guarantee that he will never see another dime of mine.

Thank you Padlin! Exactly what I was looking for. Looks like we should have plenty of options.

About half way down this website you'll see the motor vehicle use maps in pdf form. Takes a while to figure them out but there are dispersed sites located all over the place.

We are planning on making the Black Hills the first stop on our trip and arrive on July 22nd. Hoping to get in front of the Sturgis madness to follow and be on our way down the road before most of the bikes show up!
The National Forest website mentions that disbursed camping is available in the north and the south, but is short on details. About 20 years ago we did spend a few days on a beautiful dispersed site, but I don't have much confidence that I could find it again. I don't recall seeing very many spots to camp dispersed though. We may well end up in a NF designated campground and that would be fine too.

we've not seen any disbursed campsites, but there are several NF campgrounds.
The big motorcycle rally is the 2nd week of August and it is BIG, so all campgrounds will be pretty full. You should make a reservation if you can.

this website will help you find NF campgrounds in the Black Hills.

I don't recall many opportunities for disbursed camping in the black hills attraction area other than getting permission to stay on private property. Might be worth stopping at a NFS district office and inquire about camping rules and regulations. It could save you getting a visitor in the middle of the night telling you to move on.
