Planning to travel to New York state in May and was thinking of doing some of the BRP/Skyline in early May. Are the camp grounds open at that time. Also not sure how much we would see due to the weather.

Thanks for any comments.

Are there tunnels on the brp that could be a concern with the height of a class A

Don't overlook the USFS campgrounds that are also in the area. Lots of great opportunities in Nantahala, Pisgah and Cherokee NF's. Probably in Waskngton and Jefferson as well but I'm lot familiar with them.

My wife and I done the BRP from Front Royal to Cherokee back before some of the CG's closed, we took our time and spent 18 days doing it, stayed in every CG the park service is in charge of, In our 30 yrs of traveling it is our favorite trip to date, just so relaxing when you take your time and see everything along the way.

we are doing the southern 1/4 again this spring.

I love the entire Shanendoah/BRP/SMNP very much.

Thanks for all the tips.

Sounds like my plan A could be a good one. We hope to spend about 6 weeks on the road doing Niagara Falls and then heading into New England for a few weeks. Also want to avoid 95/75 and stick to the roads less travelled and thinking maybe 7 days to get to Niagara, then east into the Adirondacks, stopping at Ticonderoga before heading to our final destination Acadia NP.

We live in Florida and need to get away from the heat/humidity down here. Summer is coming earlier than ever with temperatures in the mid 80s here in Feb. Never known the a/c to come on so much during winter. So its going to be good bye Florida after this year.

Yes the CGs are open in May, and other than being chilly at night. The weather should be perfect. plus the overlooks may not be in full bloom, and you would be able to see more.

But do give yourself plenty of time. The BRP is not for getting somewhere on a schedule. It will take a few days to a week to do it.

:? Don't want you to think I'm being smart. But the BRP doesn't go to Tenn. It ends in Cherokee..

Keep in mind that the camp sites on the Parkway have no hookups... The sites do have a central bath rooms where you can also get water from a spigot... These were tent sites in the beginning.

Be sure to check out the roadways on the parkway web site... Some tunnels... Generally each of the camp ground are situated around 50 miles a part... Usually there will be a way station near the camp ground on the parkway. They usually have gasoline and a adjoining restaurant along with a gift shop and supplies etc...

If you really want hookups you can go off the parkway and usually find a good place at the major exits... Some of the exits off the parkway can be hard to maneuver with a big Rv setup... I would plan on using only the major road crossing exits...

Sherando Lake mentioned above is not on the Parkway but close by... Excellant camp ground with both hookups and dry camping spots...

For the most part I81 follows the parkway. We have driven the parkway a few time from Virginia to Tenn tent camping at first and then one time with our POPUP trailer camper...

Be sure to download the road map for the parkway - has alot of info on it...

They should be open. But check the NPS parkway web site. They also have a link to road closures.
