Campground suggestions in MIchigan

I tried this already and hope 2 posts don't show up. We plan to travel to Michigan (Pictured Rock Nat'l Lakeshore, St. Ignace or Mackinac, and Sleeping Bear Dunes) in mid to late September. Does anyone have favorite campgrounds in any of these areas? Full hook-ups are not a necessity, but we prefer electicity and water. Thanks in advance for any help. Also do most of the Michigan campgrounds close the end of September?

Thank you for all your suggestions. We loved Munising Tourist Park. We were right on Lake Superior and it was beautiful. We also stayed at Platte River and loved the campground, the sites and the beaut of the area. Michigan is so beautiful in the fall. Now biking Grand Island is another story entirely.

In the Sleeping Bear Dunes area I would suggest Indigo Bluffs RV Park. Nice facility, closer to the dunes than Platte River, nice amenities. Most sites have water & electric, but there are some FHU sites.

In the U.P. near Munising there is Munising Tourist Park just west of the town along M-28. The park is on the shores of Lake Superior with nice views of Grand Island.

A bit further east of Munising is a very nice campground right in the small village of Grand Marais called Woodland Park. They don't take reservations, but you would have no trouble getting a site in September. The campground is on a bluff above Lake Superior and has water & electric hookups. You can walk into downtown. Check out the Lake Superior Brewing Co.

In the areas around the Mackinac Bridge Mill Creek is the go to place for most campers. We've never stayed there because we used to live about 55 miles from there and just made day trips to the island.

Absolutely x2 on Platte River Campground. One of our favorite campgrounds. Sites are large and private, and the facilities are great. Electric only, but worth running with onboard water and holding tanks for the great sites. Weekdays in September should not be a problem for getting a site, but weekends might be a bit tougher due to it's popularity.

Sleeping Bear Dunes - Wild Cherry resort, half way between Suttons Bay and Leland (fish town) it has full hookups and a paper is delivered to your site every morning and the cost is just a little more than the state parks. Very quiet surrounded by cherry orchards.

For previous posts on this subject search this Forum for `Michigan' in the RV Parks section. We stay at Mackinaw Mill Creek as do others.

We only camp in state parks and have been to most of them in Michigan (lower peninsula). Most parks only have electricity and you have to fill your fresh tank at the dump station upon arrival. A few campgrounds have only a couple full hook ups. You can't go wrong with any state park along Lake Michigan. We like Ludington state park but it can be hard to get into, but probably not in September after school starts.

For Pictured Rocks, we stayed at a CG named (something like) Wagon Wheels - private CG, lots of trees. We had a popup then, so didn't care much about overhanging branches, so I can't address that issue. I have since seen pictures of the Munising city/county campground and it looks wonderful! Lots of folks here seem to recommend it. Both have at least some hookups.

We stayed at the St. Ignace KOA, again with a PUP, and liked it well enough. Straits State Park would also be a good choice - it's in St. Ignace as well. No water hookups to my knowledge but they do have electric; I'd really recommend reservations. We have stayed at Mackinaw Mill Creek CG, which many recommend, but it was huge and we HATED the FHU sites we were in at the time (which was over 25 years ago).

We did a day trip to Sleeping Bear Dunes from the Petoskey KOA, where we stayed. Nice CG but not as wooded as we would have liked.
