DETROIT?

I have to go to a wedding on August 2nd in Detroit at t he Detroit Athletic Club. I will be traveling in the motorhome and the only place I've found that is somewhat close is Harbortown in Monroe. I'll have to travel back and forth to the coach because of our diabetic dog and was wondering if there is anything closer to Downtownโ€ฆ...

I'd leave the bus somewhere outside Detroit and take your toad into town. No way would I want to navigate the streets around the Detroit sports parks in my RV.

I can recommend Harbor Town highly. I was there on business a couple of years ago and we spent a few days there. The place is excellently kept up. It was autumn and cold when I was there and the grounds guys were mowing grass then using blowers to clean off the sites. The drive from Monroe into Detroit isn't all that big a deal but you'd better be prepared to drive at a quick clip.

Wayne County Fairgrounds off I-94 on North service drive at exit 191 will be the closest you're going to find, within 20 of downtown. Power and water with dump station. Rush hour traffic is a nightmare with drives taking up to and hour to get to downtown. Have you check on parking downtown for your motor home since parking down there is limited to mostly passenger vehicles.

There are other options:

Wayne County Fairgrounds has a nice RV park:
http://www.waynecountyfairgrounds.net/Camping.html

Sterling State Park has full hookups:

There are two Oakland County Parks with campgrounds:

Also, be advised that the DAC is right next door to Comerica Park, so if the Tigers are in town you may have to deal with a ballgame, and most are fully sold out.

Good luck!

It may be an idea out in left field but you could try to contact The Michigan Good Sams? Maybe one of the members has an idea or could help you out in some way.

Yes, you'll have to drive a bit so you may as well plan on it. There are no campgrounds anywhere near the city and if there was, you wouldn't want to leave your motorhome there........not if you want it waiting for you when you get back.

Not an optionโ€ฆโ€ฆ.no boarding facility will give him his food and insulin at 5 a.m. and 5 p.m. They also will not let me pick up the dog on a Sundayโ€ฆ..I guess it is a liability issue with a dog that has medical needs like diabetes.

I'm going to check with the DAC first. I wouldn't need to spend the night anywhere in downtown I just need a "safe" place to park the coach from 5:00 p.m. to about 10 p.m. Once the reception is over I can easily drive the coach to a walmart in the suburbs or a campground. Don't really need to plug in anywhere the generator is fine for the time I am there.

I wouldn't hesitate to go to a motel and simply drive the car but I'm having trouble finding a downtown motel that is pet friendlyโ€ฆ.especially with a big newfoundland.

Bottom line: Nothing within 30 miles of downtown. My office is downtown and when we are in the area, it's a pain.

If it's 1 day and there are no other events in downtown, you might check with the DAC to see if they could arrange something to stay in one of the surface lots for the night. Even if you paid $100 for the night, it be far more convenient. The area around the stadiums is pretty safe and on the weekends, the lots are empty (unless there is an event).
