Feeling pretty good about KOA Wilmington NC

Every year we spend a few days with family over Christmas in Wilmington NC. The KOA is the only game in town for RV parks. Yea, there's one in Carolina Beach but the reviews are terrible. This year I waited too long to make my reservation and was stuck with a water and power only back-in spot. We were going to make the best of it and hit the dump station every other day or so. I got an email from them yesterday that someone had cancelled and they automatically upgraded me to a full hookup pull through (which is what I asked them to do). I was pretty happy about that. I had expected that I would never hear back from them and be stuck unhooking and driving back and forth to the dump station which I was prepared to do.

We stay here two or three times a year and have for several years and they always do a good job. Kudos to the Wilmington KOA for remembering my note in my reservation and making our trip much better. Now we can go down, hook up and relax for Christmas.

http://www.oceanbreezefamilycampground.com/amenities.php. Another choice, and on Topsail Island. Just North of Wilmington, there is http://www.lanierscampground.com/. and Surf City family CG on the island it self. If fact Surf City is the only oceanfront CG between Myrtle Beach, and The OBX. It is however small, and closed for winter.

these are just a few choices, IF you sometime can't get into the KOA. Holden and Shalotte are not far from Wilmington.

Are any of these big rig friendly ? When we visit family in Wilmington, we also stay at the KOA, but would welcome a change in scenery , if they would fit us. We are 43ft MH towing a pickup

Ocean Breeze appears to be, and Lanier's. When we were at Surf City there was a huge Class A in a site. But the sites there are pretty tight. They will put your TT on your site for you.

I would also suggest you google Holden Beach campgrounds. A good number pop up. Some on the waterway.

Wilmington KOA is ran by a good guy, he owns New Bern KOA also. They have good people who manage both campgrounds. We have camped at both and I would return to either one in a minute. New Bern KOA is on US17 north of NewBern about 2 miles over the bridge. The camp host there is very sweet lady. So if you need a place to stop for night or stay for few more either of these are nice places. Plus KOA wilmington has a fuel station and RV wash right outside the entrance.

The in town Carolina Beach CG is indeed on the main drag and very small. Units are right on top of each other. There is a state park a few miles away that looked pretty nice, but I don't remember the hook up situation. We were there in a beach house, so only rode thru on the bikes.

Man, thanks for this. At the Wilmington KOA we are like, 15 minutes from Wrightsville where family lives. But, I much prefer the quiet and less crowded campground. There are many times a year when the Wilmington KOA is booked solid. If you're going in the summer or a holiday make your reservations way in advance. I have asked them in the past about making more full hookup sites and they said that the issue had to do with city limitations on the number of sewer connections per acre or something like that. We camped at North Topsail one time some years ago and loved it. The Marine base is close by and one night we could hear the howitzers firing rounds and a few seconds later the explosions. It was way off in the distance so, it wasn't loud at all but, still pretty cool.

Well it seems I left one Oceanfront CG out. At the pier on Holden Beach. Small as well.

And there are more CGs over toward Shallotte and Holden and Sunset beach, not on the beach, but close.

Off topic, but this is amazing! Surf City Family CG! I'm 63 years old and I remember my family camping there way back in the early 60s! Dad had a 59 Plymouth Fury II station wagon and we tent camped there. Fast forward to the late 70s, I tent camped there solo while on a vacation trip on the east coast. I checked their Facebook page, they've got some old photos posted that bring back some memories!

Nothing much there, only a place to setup, and enjoy the beach
