Looking to get into fly fishing. Long time salt water angler. Now I really want to learn and get into the art of fly fishing!

With that said, I want to take trips with my DW, and two DS (13) and (18).

Wife/Kids don't like fishing too much, but they do like exploring towns, villages, hiking, campfires, etc.

Would love to find places near rivers/streams that provide full hook ups and great FF within reasonable a driving distance.

For now, places in....CA, NM, AZ, and NV to start with.

Later.....Montana!!!

Thanks!

For ultimate fun and catch and release HUGE trout, rent a guide for a 1/2 day and fish the San Juan River in May/June. You can stay on the river at Cottonwood campground just over the border of Colorado in New Mexico, part of Navajo Lake State Park. The sites are shady and very pleasant and are suitable for big rigs.

Eastern Arizona has numerous mountain streams and lakes. East/West fork of black river, Luna Lake, Big Lake, Crescent Lake and others. All within 10-45 minute drive of Alpine, AZ. Several RV campgrounds in the area as well as numerous forest service dry camp areas. Beautiful high altitude mountain area.

I don't have a particular campground in mind, although I know there are tons in the area, but the Lower Salt River in Arizona is pretty cool to float a fly. I spent more time gawking at the scenery than actually fishing. We were visiting my in-laws in Apache Junction, which from what I can remember was about a 30-40 minute drive away. There were tons of campgrounds way closer and possibly some right there that I didn't notice or investigate.

Generally speaking, you will need a fishing license for the state in which the park is located. In some cases you also need a park fishing license and be aware of the local restrictions and limits.

I know there is fishing in Yosemite, Yellowstone, Sequoia and Zion. You can go to NPS.GOV then pick your state and/or park for individual info.

Might not work for you but it meets your description - Golden Clear Creek in Colorado - Map to - Clear Creek - you can learn they can play - go to town - go to a ball game - Pool - Community Center - library - fields - restaurants.............Little bit of Paradise in the middle of Colorado - then on the way home - just so many places to try what you have learned.

Might not work, but meets all your listed qualifications, just a little bit of a drive.

Best of Luck there are many other options available,

And North Central NM. Costilla, Red River, Eagles Nest, Pecos, even down around Ruidoso and Cloudcroft.

Contact each states Game and Fish dept for maps of trout waters if that is what you are trying to catch.
