Heading to Maine-Need Suggestions

Starting in Portsmouth then up the coast on Hwy 1 right along the coast. Would like to stop along the way to see everything you might suggest. Have all kinds of time. End point would be just North of Acadia NP. Thanks to all who reply.

Acadia NP, Cadillac Mountain, Bar Harbor. Just at the end of the busy season traffic is reasonable.

Camden Hills State Park is very scenic. Largest sites are up in front, closest to rte 1 that are better for the MH's.

State park is also across the road which has a ocean trail, overlooks and picnic area.

Check out ward winning Claws restaurant in Rockland and River Ducks Ice Cream in Camden, both most stops! Don't forget to visit Owls Head & Rockland Breakwater Lighthouses, both about 30 minutes away! If your ambitious try hiking 1300' Mt Megunticook, spectacular views!!

We took route 1 from Brunswick, ME all the way to Eastport and on through New Brunswick to Prince Edward Island in July. Didn't stop at Acadia as we have been there a number of times.

Camden has a beautiful harbor with many sailboats. We stayed at Magunticook Lake Campground for Camden. There is also Camden Hills State Park about 3 miles past Camden. The State park includes Mt. Battie, with great views of Camden and Penobscott Bay. Use the toad as it's a steep climb to the top. Parking in downtown Camden is a challenge, especially for RV's, but we found easy parking On Knowlton St. about 100 yds from the intersection with Mechanic St. Free lots on both sides with the one on the left dead level if you are in the RV. Our favorite place to eat in Camden is the Waterfront Restaurant. Great scallops and tables right next to the harbor to watch the boats coming and going.

If you still plan on being in the area Columbus Day weekend I'd highly recommend you make a reservation somewhere now. That's the end of the season for many campgrounds-and campers. Be advised that Rt. 1 can be very slow-doesn't seem like that will be an issue for you though. Acadia and Bar Harbor definitely. Take a sail or a whale watch out of Bar Harbor, enjoy the shops, do a carriage ride in Acadia, stick your toes in the ice cold water at Sand Beach off the park loop road and depending on how long you are there you might start to see the leaves turn. If the Clam Shack in Kennebunkport is still open go there for clams or fish and chips.

I would definitely suggest some time in Acadia and Bar Harbor, we have been here all season and still love it. Stop at Fort Knox State Park for the day and see the fort and go up in the observation tower. Lots to see in Camden and Rockport, just take a long walk around town. We did a nice walk a few weeks back around Belfast, you need to see if the shipyard is doing a tour, unfortunately we missed it.
