Michigan Upper Penninsula

The UP is an absolute favorite place for us to camp. We have visited many attractions in the UP such as Tahquamenon Falls, Pictured Rocks, Lake Superior, Kitch-iti-kipi, etc... I am looking for more suggestions. Where have you been and what was your favorite part? What is the best campground in the UP? We would need the campground to accommodate a 30 foot travel trailer. Thank you!

Fayette SP on the garden peninsula(pit toilets, no showers but a neat/interesting restored Iron Mining/smelting town along Lake Michigan, well worth the visit, very quiet). Bewabic SP at Crystal Falls, Copper Harbor SP. Brimley SP (only go mid week and not on or near holidays as the park fills with Canadians)no disrespect, just fact! Hog Island State Forest campground (just pit toilets and hand water pumps but a neat location along Lake Michigan).

I encountered none of the biting black flies during my visits to the Porkies. Lucky. They hit an area for a few days, then they're gone. I recall one year, first weekend of August, they were out in force around Deer Park. We drove west to Grand Marais and found no flies there, so that's where we camped. We had a tent at the time, and it dropped to 40 degrees that night.... brrr! That's Lake Superior fer ya.

Don't travel the UP but I would do a Google search for `michigan up tourism' or something like that and see what comes up.

Porcupine Mountain State Park.

I'm not going to lie, the black flies were a downer.

But........if you get a site on Lake Superior, it is AMAZING!! The Ranger programs were phenomenal as well.

These photos are taken on the lake shore at our campsite.

I think just about anywhere in the UP will be great! We stayed at Munising Tourist Park Campground. I liked the lakefront site we had with a nice view of the island and great sunsets. Just wish it was warmer! Mid July and a high of 50 and cloudy the first day and 60 and sunny when we left 4 days later! The next week was mid 80's!!!! Grrrr.

Still had fun though!

Union Bay CG is my favorite up there, right on Lake Superior, check it out, you won't be disappointed. The Jack Pine CG is another nice one, right between Munising and Manistique on SR 94.

Have you been to Woodland Park in Grand Marais? Or the Ontonagon municipal park? Both of those CGs are on the big lake and (I think) should have sites that fit.

I like Bond Falls and the Porkies (nice hike along the river at the west unit).

It has been several years, but our favorite was Otter Lake campground near Munising. We found county maps that showed waterfalls and did day trips visiting many of them. We also visited many of the small towns to see what was there. Sometimes nothing, but we at least bought an ice cream, stopped for a cup of coffee somewhere in the town. Just meandering.
