Going off lizards suggestion of DC. What about the Williamsburg/va beach area? You can get educational, theme park, and beach in in a small area.

I was thinking at that age, there is a RV park in the Washington DC area, I want to say it is Cherry Hill Park. They are on public transit system. From there you can visit a different Smithsonian Museum every day. We were stationed in the area for 2 years and visited Air and Space and still did not see everything. There is also a new Air and Space museum that is near one of the airports.
If you go there, you can travel on the Baltimore Washington parkway and exit where the NSA sign is. You can visit the National Cryptologic Museum. The docents are retired NSA workers. There are all kinds of encryption machines from the past, they tell you about the codetalkers, have a display of the USS Cole, etc. The last time we were there, it was free. Also, in the town is the shopping center where Gov. Wallace was shot at a shopping mall.
You can either do day trips to Baltimore or stay so long at Cherry Hill, then go to Baltimore. The Inner Harbor is very interesting. They have the aquarium there and several World War II and Korea ships to tour. Annapolis is not very far and you can tour the Naval Academy.
There are some beaches in the area also. If I had kids, that is where I would be. You can take coolers into the museums - or at least you used to - as well as take the metro to the zoo and with your Congressmans help can tour the White House or Capitol.

Not too far away, as the crow flies, is Hunting Island State Park, kind of hard to get reservations though.

Hilton Head doesn't have campgrounds or RV parks. They do have two Motorcoach Resorts. And the McDonald's has a sign about 4 feet high. Restrictions, you know. I was there once with a group on a golf outing. We stayed in a very expensive hotel overlooking the beach and paid through the nose to play golf.
My first and last visit.
