We usually visit Myrtle Beach (Ocean Lakes) and Charleston (James Island & KOA), Outer Banks and Virginia Beach but we are looking a new place. Question is where to stay in Hilton Head and what is there to do? Any and info will be appreciated. Thanks

Oh, any other suggestions? Kids are 13 & 16.

Well the good thing about HHI is that your not too far away from Savannah. It will give you some options of things to do, as well as Charleston.

Going off lizards suggestion of DC. What about the Williamsburg/va beach area? You can get educational, theme park, and beach in in a small area.

We have been there. Thanks.

I'd much rather be in hilton head in the summer than DC. DC can get very hot and humid in the summer time without any relief of the ocean breezes that Hilton head will get.

I know they were asking about Hilton Head and it is in the opposite direction. They were looking for ideas with two teenagers.

At that age, there are places where they can get to beaches or I believe Cherry Hill has a pool, but what is wrong with going the opposite direction, especially with teenagers so they can do something different - maybe educational - without the electronic equipment? They can still get exercise, but they are old enough to appreciate the museums and monuments at our nations capitol.

lizbard,
If you were answering the person wanting info about Hilton Head Island, its nearly 600 miles south of Washington, D.C.
More likely, you gave somebody the right answer to the wrong question. ๐Ÿ™‚
Retired and visiting as much of this beautiful country as I can.

I was thinking at that age, there is a RV park in the Washington DC area, I want to say it is Cherry Hill Park. They are on public transit system. From there you can visit a different Smithsonian Museum every day. We were stationed in the area for 2 years and visited Air and Space and still did not see everything. There is also a new Air and Space museum that is near one of the airports.

If you go there, you can travel on the Baltimore Washington parkway and exit where the NSA sign is. You can visit the National Cryptologic Museum. The docents are retired NSA workers. There are all kinds of encryption machines from the past, they tell you about the codetalkers, have a display of the USS Cole, etc. The last time we were there, it was free. Also, in the town is the shopping center where Gov. Wallace was shot at a shopping mall.

You can either do day trips to Baltimore or stay so long at Cherry Hill, then go to Baltimore. The Inner Harbor is very interesting. They have the aquarium there and several World War II and Korea ships to tour. Annapolis is not very far and you can tour the Naval Academy.

There are some beaches in the area also. If I had kids, that is where I would be. You can take coolers into the museums - or at least you used to - as well as take the metro to the zoo and with your Congressmans help can tour the White House or Capitol.

Thanks for the info. We will check it out.

Businesses were difficult to find even with a GPS. It would say that we were there and our reaction would be "Really! Where?"

I will 2nd this recommendation. We LOVE HI and have reservations for the 3rd week of July.

As of yesterday, there were still sites available for that week. There were 6 available for 32' RVs and 25, total RV sites. They are not front row sites, but there are some that are available.

This place is not like Ocean Lakes, but it does have the ocean, playground (which is used by youngsters during the day and teens in the evening), bike trails, fishing, crabbing, etc. Not much commercial entertainment available, if that's what you are wanting.

It's one of our favorite vacation destinations.

I don't think it's really all hat expensive. I guess if you are used to the state parks and mcdonalds for dining, then maybe yes. But it is a very nice kept up place.

I do think your kids will probably get bored. It will be a big let down for them compared to Ocean Lakes. Besides the beach and riding a bike, I think there is a water slide park. Or at least there used to be. That's about it for them there. Will probably be more of a place to your liking once the kids are grown.

Hilton Head doesn't have campgrounds or RV parks. They do have two Motorcoach Resorts. And the McDonald's has a sign about 4 feet high. Restrictions, you know. I was there once with a group on a golf outing. We stayed in a very expensive hotel overlooking the beach and paid through the nose to play golf.
My first and last visit.

Not true. The HHI Harbor RV Resort allows travel trailers and fifth wheels.

Not our favorite beach. There is very little beach access in fact there are very few places that you can see the ocean as everything is private and gated. It is pretty expensive. The Motor coach resort down close to town is a really nicer place but not close to the beach. Were were there in October of 2012
