We just bought a new travel trailer, and are looking for a good campground for our maiden voyage. We are in the Phoenix area, and are looking for our first outing to be the end of August/first couple weeks of September. (We're quite excited about it)

It would be like a 4-day weekend, to get our proverbial feet wet.

Thanks, all.

Late August - early September says over 7000' to me unless one wants to hibernate in the TT. I second the rim country, south of Flag or toward Heber. Lots of national forest cg's in those areas. And only a few hours driving time. If you were willing to spend more time driving you could head up to the the White Mountains, maybe the Big Lake area. Nice cg's and a bit overdeveloped for my taste, but that's me.As an afterthought, I assumed you would dry camp. If you want hookups you'll be far more limited but Canyon Point has them and a couple of the cg's at Big Lake do too.

For your first trip out IMHO I would stay in the valley. Some of the parks that we enjoy going to for a weekend are Lost Dutchman State Park or the Maricopa County Parks Cave Creek, Usery or our favorite McDowell.

Welcome !!

Desert Captain is right but Grand Canyon South Rim is a must and we are currently at Distant Drums in Camp Verde (first night out heading to Oregon) and we love this part and all to see in the area including Sedona.

So much to see; so little time!

I am sure you would enjoy the Mogollon Rim area northeast of Payson. This will get you high enough for nice cool temps and the view from the Rim is breathtaking. Canyon Point (7,700') is probably the nicest CG in the area (and as such reservations are always a good idea) but there about a dozen more and all are gorgeous. It requires some climbing but the roads are good and it is not a bad drive from the Phoenix area. Enjoy!
