No. Calif/So. Oregon Scenic Loop Ideas?

Help me plan a loop through No. Calif/So. Oregon, from So. Calif. This will be in June, for approx. 3 weeks. Objectives will be sightseeing and fly fishing, with some walking/mild hikes. I prefer wilderness settings for camping, hook-ups not needed. Will have toad (CRV). Also, I’ll make reservations for the first week or so, but prefer the flexibility of not having committed reservations for last half of trip.

Here’s what I’m planning so far (pretend I’m starting the trip north of SF Bay area, on 101):

1) Humboldt Redwoods State Park, 2 nights. Sightseeing.

2) Jedediah Smith State Park, 2 nights. Sightseeing.

3) Collier Memorial State Park (Oregon), 5 nights. Will fish the Williamson, visit Crater Lake, etc (we will have family meeting us at Collier). Question – on way to Collier CG, do I want to set aside extra night between Cresent City and Grants Pass, along Rogue River? Decent stream fishing?

4) McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial Campground, 2 nights. Will fish in Burney Creek at CG and take toad back to McCloud area for stream fishing.

5) Lassen, Manzanita CG, 2 nights. Sightseeing in Lassen.

6) From Lassen, we’ll head south/east toward Reno and 395. Any wilderness settings, with a stream, that a 34’ class A can get to? How about along the 70 (near Quincy or Portola), or the 44 near Susansville?

7) Between Carson City & Bridgeport, any recommendations?

😎 From Bridgeport south (on 395), I know the options fairly well(will spend day or two in Mammoth area).

coming from Burney to Reno area at Old Station you have Hat Creek for some fantastic fly fishing...several campgrounds-we favor Cave or Old Station.

Rocky Point on Klamath Lake off Hwy 140 has has an absolutely mind boggling concentration of larger trout. You'll need a pontoon boat or some other type of float craft to get to them. They can be very tight lipped, but the number and size of the fish will blow your mind. I think you can rent boats at Rocky Point Resort. The Wood River can also hold some nice fish, but access is complicated and it's hard to find the fish.

Collier Memorial is as far north as we will take the RV, but we will explore in the toad from there (will be there 5 days). Intend to visit Crater Lake. Please PM me with good spots to float a fly.

Hi,

Have you considered going just a little further north to the N. Umpqua river (along hwy 138)? And, with the low snow pack this year, perhaps the N. entrance to Crater Lake will be open by then as well. You could spend the entire three weeks just in that area alone.

Looks like you've done your home work. Good spots all the way up and around. Leaving Lassen, hwy 89 will keep you along the rivers where fishing is good. At least hwy 89 to 80.

While on 395 just north of Mono Lake is the ghost town of Bodie. Worth your time if the snow is gone. It sits at around 10000 feet. Mono Lake itself is also very interesting.

That opens up another option, instead of the 101 north from SF, I could take the 5 to Redding, then the 299 to the coast (would be nice to find a camp spot along the Trinity River). Then up the coast to Prairie Creek. Thanks for the suggestion.

Instead of Humboldt and Jed Smith, I would focus on Prairie Creek, if you have limited time. In much of Humboldt, the highway can be heard from the hiking trails. The hiking in Jed Smith is kind of limited. Prairie Creek has a lot of great world-class hiking through silent old growth trees.

Having said all of that, my wife is a redwood nut, and whenever we go up there we stop in all three parks. But that is over a ten day span of time.
