Parking in Progresso Mx

We have walked to Progresso many times, but due to a leg problem, we would like to drive this year.

What is the proper procedure for paying the parking attendants - before we go shopping, or when we return? Is there a set amount that they expect, or is it whatever you want to give them?

Is there any special documentation needed for the car either entering Mx or returning to the U.S.?

Thanks for any info you can give us.

There are taxis from Harlingen that will take you over, you can meet them by the store where you normally park your car on the US side.

But don't you have to walk across the border into Mexico to get a taxi? I can't remember ever seeing a cab on the U.S. side of the border that would drive you across. Also, the wait time crossing the border back into the U.S. in a vehicle is a lot longer than walking across. This may have changed in the past few months since I haven't made the trip yet this year. When I did drive, I purchased Mexican insurance (at AAA I think) and had my passport. The only negative was the long lines of vehicles crossing into the U.S. due to U.S. custom enforcement at the border. But if you have the time and your health prevents you from walking, take your RV/auto and enjoy the trip.

We have ALWAYS been asked for passports when walking back to USA from Progresso.

I think it's best to be careful. In the times we've spent in Mexico we've had Mexican car insurance as our coverage wasn't valid in Mexico, and we carry our passports as well. We walked across in Algodones a couple of times and didn't get asked for passports on our return but driving back across may be different. We've even been asked for passports at check stations inland in Texas and in Arizona, so be prepared!

Totally agree with Pawatt...we are talking about a day trip here! Making sure you are covered by insurance is the most important part.

I think the above replies are making it more complicated than need be. Make sure your insurance will cover you. Most will cover within X miles of the border. Tip whoever parks you a couple $$$. Some will wash your car while you shop, or watch it. If so another tip when you leave. Many of our friends drive over with no problems to date. If you are staying in Mexico for weeks or months than it is more complicated.

Crossing into another country requires significant research regarding passports, insurance for car and people, and importation rules regarding the vehicle. Asking how to do that on any internet forum is foolish. You should go to the Mexican government's website and get the answer there.

In Mexico, for example, have an automobile accident without Mexican insurance, and you are subject to being jailed and your automobile confiscated. The Mexican authorities will not care that the posters on RV.net told you it was OK!

The previous advice about taking a taxi was very good.
