planning a trip to texas. prob San Antonio. but we are open to suggestions for other places
does anyone have a favorite camp ground in San Antonio

If you are authorized to use military facilities I highly recommend the Joint Base San Antonio Recreation Area at Canyon Lake. My wife and I just spent a week there and we loved it! We also drove through the RV campground on Ft. Sam Houston and it looked very nice. We just enjoy being closer to water and nature. If you cannot use military facilities there were several nice-looking RV parks on FM 306 (?) between New Braunfels and Canyon Lake.

heres one we stayed at this pass jan. hidden valley rv resort.a really nice cg. they have two layers, one by a creek, and the other is up at a big field. wow can see air force c-5a galaxy take off. wow we went into san-atonio and saw a rodieo, and saw mr. tim McGraw do some singing. one am at the hidden valley rv park, they gave us a cowboy breakfast that will always be remembered.now its all happy-camping

San Antonio is my favoriteplace to visit in Texas, been there at least a couple dozen times since 1980. Probably visited Houston more often, but that was usually business.

When I take the RV, I like to stay at Traveler's World for easy access to mass transit. This is not a campground, it is a RV park. Most of the places near San Antonio where you can stay with a RV are RV parks or RV resorts, rather than campgrounds, and most will not allow camping, require you to bring and stay in a self contained RV.

Nearest campgrounds I know of will be north of San Antonio, on the Guadalupe River (a state park) or around Canyon Lake (CoE campgrounds).

Other places I like in Texas:

Davis Mountains State Park
Copper Breaks State Park
Palo Duro Canyon State Park
Goliad State Park
Dinosaur Valley State Park
Fredericksburg at Christmas
Palestine (one end of the railway trail)
Port Aransas and Mustang Island, where there is a state park on the beach, but some of the RV resorts are nicer, if you can get a space.

Texas RV Parks...now that's a tall order. Here are a few I've stayed at.
Sea Breeze: In Portland, Texas next to Corpus Christi right on a private fishing bay. Nice clean facilities, laundry, iffy Wifi but good when it's good, pool and spa, activities during the busier winter season, exercise room. I always ask for the pull thrus across from the Bay.

Hidden Valley RV: In Von Ormy, TX, minutes to downtown San Antonio and the Alamo and Riverwalk. Wifi, country atmosphere, private fishing creek, laundry, very helpful staff with lots of touring hints, day long bus tour from park to San Antonio attractions. On a decent, 1/2 mi gravel entrance road.

Any of the State Parks: been to many and they are all fantastic.

I live in North Central Texas outside of Fort Worth, but San Antonio is one of my favorites cities to visit in Texas.
We haven't made a trip down there since purchasing our travel trailer so I can't advise on campgrounds in the immediate vicinity, but one of my next favorite cities in Texas is Austin. I have camped there on a couple of recent occasions. I can highly recommend McKinney Falls State Park in Austin. It is just a couple of miles from the airport and basically a wilderness within the city. Beautiful crystal clear river and falls flowing through the park.
The other near-by place that I've camped recently is Jim Hogg Corp of Engineers park at Lake Georgetown. Every (or most) site has a large covered picnic table area. All the campsites are spacious.
I'm sure that others can advise of campgrounds closer to San Antonio, but Austin is also a great place to visit.

We like Traveller's World RV park in San Antonio. It has big sites, nice amenities. You can catch a city bus right across the street that will take you downtown to the Riverwalk area. It is also close to all the missions, bike trail etc.

Ummm, in case you haven't looked at a map recently, Texas is a very big state. Without some idea of what your interests are, somebody would be hard pressed to recommend another area.

You would probably also get better responses if you asked a moderator to move your post to the RV Parks, Campgounds forum.
