I understand and agree with that.

However, I don't see where anyone was proposing to break USA law.

Doesn't matter.

This subject of snowbirds filling out the form 8840 from the IRS has been out for years now. I gave up telling anyone I knew about it as they just scoffed at the idea and said I'm not filling out anything.

End of discussion. Snowbirds just laughed at the suggestion they need to fill out this form. I said to them, sooner or later you could be sorry.

I'm not sure what motivated that comment.

X2!!! I have worked in the US and also snowbirded for many years. Yes, I have paid US Income taxes and also submitted the 8840. Never had a problem. And yes, it takes a bit more effort to file in both countries, but that is the rules and I knew that going in.

One of the items in the linked article is:

"It is better not to stay longer than six months in the United States, especially since you risk losing your health insurance from Quebec."

(It's SEVEN months for Ontario)

The point that the author DOESN'T make is that travel insurance is SECONDARY insurance. Once you lose your PRIMARY insurance (e.g OHIP in Ontario) your highly priced travel insurance is WORTHLESS.

I've heard many people say "How will they know?". Duh! Every government is spying on its own citizens either directly as in the case of the US or indirectly as in the case of Canada (probably directly here too except that no one has blown the whistle yet).

Now that you've alerted them, they'll assign someone to find a way to tax this too.

I don't feel sorry for folks that ignore the rules (although I'm not a fan of the IRS). On the other hand, down here in FL there are a lot of Canadians who funnel lots of money into the local economies thru sales taxes or usage fees, and I wouldn't want to see them penalized to the point that they stay home.

Just do your 8840 each year and keep track of your 'days' per guidelines and you are good. Maybe not so good those with dual citizenship.
