The Steps in AZ closed

One of the places that we “dry camp” when in AZ is called “The Steps” located on the east side of AZ Hwy 95 south of Lake Havasu City and about 2-3 miles north of the Bill Williams N.W.R.

A friend that is already in the area says that the state of AZ has closed the steps to camping except by permit only! The 14 day permit costs $20 and is available from Phoenix in person or by mail. However when he went by the steps the other day there was nobody camping there!

Does anybody have additional information about this?
Thanks for your input

Yes, we know of quite a few RVers that are preparing to leave The Steps presently. Yes, they did get the required permit.

This map needs to be updated. There are areas shown as state trust land that has been sold off at auction as much as 3 years ago that I know of.

I just went on the AZ Land Trust Map and you can see, it's their property.

I wonder how they keep track of how many days you've been on their land?

It's not the cost, it's the hassle.

Anybody in the area to check? We haven't yet stayed there but it was always a possible boondock site. Will be unfortunate if it is closed to camping.

I have no idea who owns this property, but if it's state trust land you can get the permit in person or by mail. I got mine by mail and it only took a couple days.

I was told that the steps are on AZ land that is why you have to now get a permit from the state of AZ. Ihe confusing thing is that there isn't anybody camping there as of now. If there is a barrier across the access road or not I don't know. If the state of AZ is patroling the area I don't know.

$20 for 14 nights sounds affordable, even if obtaining the permit is a bit of a hassle.

You might try contacting the BLM Lake Havasu Field Office. If it is not their land, they might know whom to contact.

Though I don't know for sure as the AZ state land web site isn't real clear on where the "Steps" are in relation to their map, I bet the "Steps" are located on Arizona Land Trust grounds.

There is a yearly recreation pass that covers all AZ state trust land for an individual it's 15$, and $20 for a family. There are time in location limits, or least there used to be. There is a lot of state land available for those looking to get away from it all on the cheap if you are willing to do some research.
