Where would you go for the month of May?

I may have the opportunity to RV for the entire month of May this year.

Travel would originate from Salem OR... returning to Salem by the first of June.

I have a 36' 5th wheel... I can dry camp comfortably for about 5 days at time... Hook ups are nice but not required unless I need to run my AC.

I prefer Forest Service and State Parks when I can fit... At 13 feet high sometimes trees are an issue. RV parks are acceptable especially if the sites have a fire pit.

I have been to the OR coast a few times but not sure about the weather in May... It could be a little to cool and damp in May. I live in Alaska and would prefer warm dry weather for most of this trip.

I'm considering traveling within a 1500 mile radius from Salem... maybe a 3000 mile loop adventure to experience the best of the West.

Any suggestions for a route and must see locations?

Thanks!

Well I would have to disagree with staying away from Florida in May. I have lived here year round for 31 yrs. May is nice as the snowbirds have left and the heat and humidity hasn't set in yet. We go to the Keys every year in May and love it. Yes, the summer months are hot and humid but you always find ways around that.

The only problem with May on the Calif coast is that in most years we have fog and low clouds (which I happen to like, since it is such a nice change from the endless sunshine). This year, who knows? So the views might not be great at that time of year, and the ocean water is still pretty cold (low 60s). But if you get to Monterey, the aquarium is world class, and the seafood is among the best in California.

The California coast is great in May whereas further east you can run into snow. Thanks to global warming we are also getting very little rain and unusually warm weather. It was in the 80's today in Monterey.

I would travel down Highway 101 through San Francisco and down to Monterey and then use the trailer as a base to explore the area and then head south to the Morro Bay area (Cambria, Cayucos, etc.).

In late June you would have more options but in May snow will limit your choices.

Agreed!

The North Rim of the Grand Canyon might be open in early May -- and you can boondock (yes, with a big rig!) in the Kaibab National Forest. That is not worth a full month, but several days would be great, as part of a Southern Utah loop.

Northern or eastern Az. Happy Jack Lodge southeast of Flagstaff. Hook up sites are tight but they also have some beautiful dry sites all pull through Last time I was there my site was 172' long. In the tall pines. Sites are 30' or so apart. I dislike parks and this was only the third time in 16 yrs that I stayed in one. It's about 6600' and temps will be high 70's day & high 40's night.

Most of the desert southwest is good in May. It will be warmer in Death Valley than Grand Junction, CO but both will be comfortable enough. You can still get freezes in May in the higher elevations and the desert may have high wind issues. Pick an activity-fishing, sight seeing, socializing, etc-and plan accordingly. Generally, if you are below 7500ft in May the weather should be nice.

I personally enjoy driving for a day and then stopping for 1-2 days to see the local area. You can cover a lot of ground and see some nice country that way.

The one state to stay away from in May is Florida. That is unless you like weather that feels just like sticking your head into an over set at 450 degrees! :C

Utah! Weather is perfect in May, mostly. You can see Canyonlands, Arches, Dead Horse Point, Capitol Reef, Goosnecks SP, Goblin Valley SP, Monument Valley (AZ), Bluff Fort, Bryce, Zion and even the Grand Canyon.

Colorado will still be cold and have lots of snow.
Live Long and Prosper.

Home is where we park it.
