looking at taking the kids skiing mid january to Tahoe towing our 30ft TT 4-5 hrs from Santa Cruz, CA.
Some campgrounds in Truckee and Zephyr are open, is this a terrible idea!?!?
Would aim to ski at one of the lower priced resorts maybe Donner near Truckee?
THANKS!

I'd say keep the trip adjustable. Weather in January could go either way. It may be clear and gorgeous. It may be wet and gloomy. It may be snowing.

How about booking a simple hotel room (refundable) for the nights you want to go? Then, if the weather is such that you don't feel comfortable taking the trailer, you won't have to cancel the trip.

Pollock Pines is a good option, but remember on clear weekends, 50 can be very very crowded.

I know folks who go up Hwy 4 for skiing, so you might look at options further south. Might be less expensive than Lake Tahoe.

If your TT is equipped for the overnight temperature well below freezing I would say you are good to go. Watch your propane and possibly have an extra cylinder. But if you will have to do without the water system I think you are better getting a room. I go to Mammoth RV down south.

After spending some time in the Reno area, and driving the interstate into California, I would not want to deal with that route in the winter, especially towing a TT. It's a dicey stretch of road under good conditions, even worse when a little snow drops and people get stupid. CHP is strict about chain usage as well.

If you plan to stay in your rig, I would stay closer to Reno and make the hour or so drive to Truckee/Donner/etc. There is a casino CG right on the CA/NV border that has gotten very good reviews. I haven't stayed there, but did take a drive through the park once; looks pretty nice.

Can't offer any thoughts on the cost of skiing or the best place.

IMHO, I would not choose to drive in snow with my trailer under any circumstances. My truck has the optional ANTI-SNOW feature, If my truck gets 1/4 mile near snow, the engine turns off until I turn around to go in the opposite direction!! But if you choose to go ,check with CHP about any chain requirements when towing a trailer in the snow. Personally for safety and pleasure reasons, I would drive in my car/truck with chains and find a motel.

Maybe skiing Sierra-At-Tahoe, camping in Pollock Pines. Depending on the year, 50 to Pollock Pines is clear, and 45 min drive to Sierra.

I don't know of any resorts in the area, that I would call lower priced, even Donner.
But Donner does cost less than Squaw or Heavenly.
