Upper New York Fall Trip

Hi all. We are looking for an area to stay in for 4 or 5 days mid October to see leaves changing. We would like large campsites

We are looking for some good small towns to visit and day activities for the kids.

Was considering the finger lakes sections.

Any suggestions?

Wellesley Island is beautiful. Its in the Thousand Islands; most of the campgrounds up there are great!

Here is what Letchworth looked like last October 13th. More photos at October Trip to Letchworth

We Admittedly have not been to all the NY State Parks, but of the many we have been to, this one is our favorite.

Besides the George Eastman house, Rochester is also home to the Strong Museum of Play and the Seneca Park Zoo. Seabreeze amusement park is also a neat place, but they will have already closed for the season in October.

If your travels bring you a tad further east or in CNY, Villages RV Park at Turning Stone Casino (1/2 hour east of Syracuse/I81) and plenty to do see things and Lafayette NY is home to many apple orchards. Just a suggestion.

Thanks guys I just booked 5 days at letchworth. Can anyone suggest a few small towns in the area to shop. I read Skantaeles was a great visit but it was a little far away for a day drive.

Canandaigua is good
Victor is also
There is an outlet mall in Waterloo. It is on Rt 318,(good road) parallel's I-90 between exit42 and 41. Probably an 45 minutes East of Letchworth. Oneonta is a nice college town
I think you will be happy at Letchworth.

Looks like Lake George is a good distance from where you are staying... I was going to mention Fort Ticonderoga at the northern end. Very cool to visit if you are into history.

I see that you've booked. Have a great time.
Others may be interested in Wellesley Island State Park. Right on the St Lawrence Seaway with several small towns nearby. There are also wineries galore, some with bourbons etc as well.

Good score on the reservation. Geneseo is a nearby SUNY college town, looks like a few interesting things to do and see. And there is a Wal-mart Supercenter, if necessary.

Lake Ontario has trophy smallmouth fishing and the Finger Lakes are generally good smallmouth and largemouth fisheries as well.

You will need reservations. Make them now. Many parks in New England/Upstate NY close Labor Day.

Since you're not from the area, stay off anything labeled "Parkway" in NY and CT. You're not allowed and you won't fit (low clearance structures designed for passenger cars). Don't rely on a GPS or Google Maps.
