It is so cold in MN that the governor ordered all schools in MN closed Monday, In my 63 years I do not remember this. -55 below wind chills in our home town. Sure thankful we are snowbirding. It was 125 degrees warmer than that here today. Just heard that WI schools are also closed.

True, but if the wind speed is not the same, comparing one region to another means nothing. Ambient temperature should be quoted when making comparisons. Especially, for RVing topics when we are very interested in our systems freezing. Prue water freezes at 32F ambient temperature. Wind speed does not affect the fact water freezes at 32F.

If the ambient temp is 40F and the wind speed is 15mph, the wind chill is 32F. Water will not freeze at this wind chill of 32.

BTW, my Dad knew the developer of the wind chill chart. He was Paul Siple, an antarctic explorer with Richard Byrd.

You've never lived up north have you. Trust me, to the body wind chill makes a huge difference in extreme cold environments.

I live in Pittsburgh and have all my 68 years.

Windchill temperatures are meaningless when making comparisons from on region to another.

Well here in Zephyrhills, FL it didn't get quite as cold last night as it did the night before but still pretty chilly. Hope it's behind us now and we are looking forward to the 80's they're predicting for the weekend. :B

Cold here in Myrtle Beach (SC) too yesterday. It never got above freezing with a high of 27F, got down to 14F Monday night.

Should be getting back up to 'normal' with a 68-71F over the weekend.

News report today in North Central Florida:

.....40 degrees in Florida and one county school closed today due to the "cold". :R

.....at 45 degrees they make special arrangements for the homeless so they don't freeze to death. :R

I get a chuckle here also sitting in Panama City Beach.
Everybody talking about frigid temps in the mid west.
Not a mention of Winnipeg a few hundred miles due north.

It was +1C here this am and +4C back home in Ottawa ????

"A Wind Chill Advisory is issued when wind chill index values will
drop to 30 or lower for at least 2 hours for the Rio Grande
Valley and 25 degrees or lower for 2 or more hours for the Rio
Grande plains and northern ranch lands... with winds of 10 mph or
greater."

As someone who lives in one of the coldest places in North America, have to chuckle at the regional "wind chill advisory" as issued for Rio Grand Valley !!!! 30F or lower for at least 2 hours...:B Not to belittle this, wind chill warnings are triggered by vary differing climate regimes, region by region.

As a comparison, wind chill advisories for our area don't even kick in till about -35C (-31F) :E And, in other parts of Quebec, north of St Lawrence River, wind chill warnings don't kick in till -50. We regularly get -30C or much worse here on our mountain for weeks at a time, in December, January and February. When the temps are 25F to 29F and the sun is out, we sit outside in the sun in front of our garage with a glass of wine, taking a tan; the garage is a very effective wind-break :B

Wiki wind chill criteria: "In Canada the warning is issued based on a regions normal climate. Thus in Southern Ontario and Atlantic Canada the warning is issued at -30/-35 and most of Canada it is issued at -45 while in Northern Manitoba and Northern Quebec and the Canadian Arctic the warning is not issued until -50"

Pawatt, thanks for doing the weather in the four snowbird areas. 32 tomorrow in Mission TX where it never freezes.
